[04/09/01] The Warren Central Lady Vikes turned out to be rude hosts at Saturday’s Coca-Cola Relays, burning up the track for three meet records, 10 wins and a 56-point gap between themselves and their nearest challengers.

“They were really psyched up for it,” WC coach Andrea Fairchild said. “Their goals were to break records here, and they did a real good job of that.”

Wanda Calvin won three individual events for WC and was on the winning 4×400 meter relay team, which broke a 13-year-old meet record with a time of 4 minutes, 24.78 seconds.

Another member of the relay team, Wendy Thomas, doubled, winning the 200 meters in a record time of 25.7 seconds and the long jump.

Calvin, who also won the high jump, 100-meter low hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, and Thomas were voted co-MVPs.

“Wanda was a bit of a surprise, but a good surprise … today was just her day,” Fairchild said.

Raymond ran away with the boys’ title, beating Vicksburg 166-132. WC was third (129) and defending Class 2A champ Hinds AHS was a distant fourth (41).

Johnny Johnson (shot put, discus) and Carey Mays (110-meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles) doubled for the Rangers.

“I knew if we could meet (our) goals, we’d come out victorious,” Raymond coach Michael Fields said.

The VHS 4×400 relay team of Lamar Smothers, Antonio Rainey, Michael D. Brown and Chris Humes set a meet record with a time of 3:26.46, shattering Raymond’s two-year-old mark by a second. Raymond had run the second-fastest time this season.

WC’s Chase Grogan was selected boys MVP after cruising to wins in the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters, and finishing second to VHS’ Lane Campbell in the 800 meters.

“Chase ran some of his best times today. And (Campbell), that was the only race he ran today so it made a difference … ,” WC coach Morris Johnson said.

Behind wins in the shot put and discus by JaQuita Benard, the Lady Vikes swept the field events.

Meet records by the 4×100 relay team of Krystal Young, Davina McGowan, Kashondra London and Thomas, as well as the 4×400 team of Calvin, Thomas, McGowan and Young, only added to the rout.

The Missy Gators had four second-place finishes and four thirds, but no wins to finish third.

“This is about what I expected,” VHS coach Eric Solis said.
