Benjamin Summerlin, a Shiers Communications outfielder, top left, is having more fun scooping up dirt with his glove than trying to catch a ball in it during a Cub League game on opening day at Culkin Athletic Association Saturday. The Cub League is for players ages 4-6. Top right, Justin McDaniel of Shiers tries to block the sun with his glove and his hat as temperatures climbed into the upper 80s. At bottom left, Lions International’s Austin Adcock runs in to field a grounder as Waste Management’s Ashley Baker reaches second base safely in a Farm League (7-8-year-olds) contest. At bottom right, Makayla Stewart gets a pat on the head from her father and coach Michael Stewart after stepping on second for an out. Leagues for players ages 4-15 began Saturday. There are 260 players at Culkin. The Vicksburg Baseball Association begins play April 21. (The Vicksburg Post/MELANIE DUNCAN)
