CORA WILLIAMS DOSS

FAYETTE Cora Williams Doss died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 68.

Mrs. Doss was born in Jefferson County and had lived in Fayette for most of her life. She attended Alcorn State University.

She retired from the Jefferson County School System and was also retired as a factory worker. She was a member of Rose Hill No. 2 Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam Williams Sr. and Gertrude Higeon, and a brother, Alfonse Williams.

Survivors include her husband, Joe E. Doss of Fayette; two sons, Michael Williams of Chicago and Keith Doss of Fayette; a daughter, Cheryl Kariuki of Vicksburg; four brothers, Gus Gilchrist of Fayette, Ezekiel Williams of Las Vegas, Henry Williams of Chicago and Sam Williams Jr. of Jacksonville, Ark.; a sister, Lugenia Rowan of Fayette; seven grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill No. 2 Baptist Church in Fayette with the Rev. James Beverly officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Israel Baptist Church cemetery in Fayette.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday at Rollins Chapel in Fayette.

ALBERT HARRIS

Albert “Red” Harris died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at his home. He was 65.

A native of Mobile, Ala., Mr. Harris was the son of the late Leland and Lillie Harris. He had been employed with International Paper Company for 23 years before retiring in 1974 as a shipping and receiving clerk. He was employed as a truck driver for the past 20 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Ann Heard of Vicksburg; three sons, Alan Harris and Anthony “Red” Harris, both of Vicksburg, and Danny Harris of Houston, Texas; a sister, Sylvia Carpenter of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Robert Harris of Saraland, Ala.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Jacks officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Matt Stacy, James A. Winstead, Jodie Murphy, Paul Conerly, Mike Morgan and Joe Chapin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Black and Cecil Rials.

WILLIE RUTH KING

PORT GIBSON Willie Ruth King died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 80.

Mrs. King was a member of Pine Grove Christian Church where she was a member of the Christian Women Fellowship. She was employed with the Jasper County Home Extension Office as a home economist for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel King, and her mother, Bertha Woods-King.

She is survived by a brother, Phoenous King of Port Gibson; a sister-in-law, Annie C. King of Port Gibson; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Christian Church in Port Gibson with James Devine officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

ROSIE LEE SYLVESTER

Memorial services for Rosie Lee Sylvester will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with Willie Gross officiating.

Visitation will be from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sylvester died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 75.

A homemaker, Mrs. Sylvester was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sylvester Sr.; a daughter, Rosetta McClain; and her mother, Litha Cupit.

Survivors include six sons, Joseph Sylvester Jr., Jessie Sylvester, Isaac Sylvester and James Sylvester, all of Vicksburg, Paul Sylvester of Shreveport and Add Sylvester of Flint, Mich.; six daughters, Frances Taylor and Delia Mae Sylvester, both of Houston, Texas, and Adell Lindsey, Marilyn Williams, Christine DeFrance and Delores DeFrance, all of Vicksburg; 31 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and other relatives.

THELMA CHRISTINE THOMAS

JACKSON Thelma Christine Thomas died Tuesday April 24, 2001, at Willow Creek Nursing Home. She was 77.

Mrs. Thomas was a former resident of Vicksburg and had lived in Jackson for the past 40 years. She was a retired waitress for Sadie’s Fish House in Crystal Springs. She was a former switchboard operator for Vicksburg Medical Center and was employed with Southern Bell Telephone Company. She was a member of Parkway Baptist Church in Clinton.

She is survived by her husband, R.C. Thomas of Jackson; a son, Tommy Thomas of Jackson; a daughter, Christine Langston of Jackson; a brother, Pat Lott of Kosciusko; a sister, Vera Rials of Crystal Springs; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rosemont Gardens Memorial Park in Jackson. Burial will follow at Rosemont Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.

JAMES TURNER

Services for James “Pimp” Turner will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Springhill M.B. Church, 1815 Mission 66, with the Rev. Frank Gardner Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at New Zion Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mr. Turner died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 31.

Mr. Turner was employed with Jessie Benard Construction and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerome Turner Sr.; a brother, Jerome Turner Jr.; and grandparents, Rosie Turner and Louis Gaskin Sr.

He is survived by two sons, Jamal J. Smith and Jarquez Smith, both of Vicksburg; his mother, Ruby Callahan of Vicksburg; three brothers, Joe Turner and William Callahan, both of Vicksburg, and Scott Callahan Jr. of Ruston, La.; four sisters, Gloria Mitchell, Cora Turner and Rita Callahan, all of Vicksburg, and Dorothy Turner of Muskegon, Mich.; his paternal grandfather, Henry Turner; and his maternal grandmother, Evangaline Barber.
