[05/01/01] John Caldwell shot a 79 to lead St. Aloysius to a seven-stroke win over defending state champion Mercy Cross in Monday’s Division 4-1A tournament.

Frank Ferguson followed with an 85, Beau Theobald had a 91 and Andy Amborn shot 93 as the Flashes finished with a combined 349 at Wolf Hollow, Co-Lin Community College’s course.

“We played bad, but we did good enough to win,” coach Jim Taylor said. “It was really windy, but it was the same for everyone.”

Mercy Cross, which won the division and state titles last year, was second with 367, followed by Union (375), West Lincoln (402), Bogue Chitto (411), Sebastopol (419) and Stringer (461).

Taylor said his team has a shot at winning the state tournament, which will also be at Wolf Hollow Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We’ve got to play better, though,” he said.
