Warren Central, Vicksburg finish 3rd, 4th, advance to state tournament

[05/01/01] Warren Central and Vicksburg advanced to the state golf tournament on Tuesday, with the Vikings capturing third place and the Gators taking fourth in the Region 2-5A match at Raymond.

Teams needed to shoot under a 360 to advance to the state tournament in Olive Branch Monday and Tuesday. WC shot a 321, while Vicksburg had a 353.

WC’s Edward Russell shot a 72, but did not medal after losing a playoff to Madison Central’s Matt Garren. Richard Rhett had a 78, while Anthony Klein shot an 82 and Hunt Gilliand had an 89.

The Vikings’ No. 1 golfer, Blake Strong, shot an 82, but because of a scorecard error, ended up with a 119 He signed a card that had his front-nine total (41) as his ninth-hole total. The mistake did not cost WC in the standings.

Strong shot a 41 on the front nine holes, but the official scorer a golfer from Clinton put the 41 as Strong’s score for the ninth hole alone. Strong signed the card making it official and landing him with a 119, a mere 37 strokes more than he shot on the hole.

Bill Hassell led Vicksburg with an 83, while Nade Ellis had an 84, Elliott Flaggs shot an 86 and Kiger Sigh hit a 98.

Madison Central won the team title with a 296, while Clinton finished second with a 306.
