Noon Saturday deadline to sign up to vote on June 5

[05/04/01] The Vicksburg City Clerk’s Office will be open until noon Saturday for voter registration for the June 5 municipal general election.

Poll books list the names of 17,407 registered voters in the city; 6,172 cast ballots in Tuesday’s political party primaries. Residents who have never voted in the city or have moved have until Saturday’s deadline to sign up at City Hall.

All of the candidates in the three municipal races will appear on one ballot, and voters can vote across party lines in general elections. The candidate with the most votes wins; there will be no run-offs.

After winning the Democratic primary Tuesday, incumbent Mayor Robert Walker, 57, will face independents Eva Marie Ford, 63, Laurence Leyens, 37, and former mayor Joe Loviza, 61, in the general election. Walker is seeking his third full term, and Loviza is looking for a second term.

In the North Ward, two-term incumbent Gertrude Young, 45, who defeated three challengers in the Democratic primary, is facing one challenger in the general election, Sylvester Walker, 40.

For the South Ward alderman’s seat, the names of the Republican primary winner, Sidney H. Beauman Jr., 52, and Democratic primary winner, Pam Johnson, 35, will appear on the ballot along with those of independentsVickie Bailey, 33, and Ashlea Mosley, 18.

In the 1997 general election, 8,867 ballots were cast. In the 1997 primaries, 5,722 ballots were cast.
