MARY BRIGGS

Mary “Bernadine” Briggs died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Heritage House Nursing and Retirement Center. She was 71.

A native of Vicksburg, Mrs. Briggs was the daughter of Bernard and Valda Reynolds. She was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy. She worked as an engineering technician with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1987 with more than 30 years of service. She lived in Niceville, Fla., from 1987 until 1998. She was a member of ParkView Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and of the Catholic faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Briggs.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Pat Reynolds, both of Vicksburg; and a sister, Alma Jeter of Memphis.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas McGing officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Thursday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Trahan, Melvin Breeden, Charles Trahan, Shannon Hosemann and Cecil Russell.

Honorary pallbearers will be ParkView Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.

JESSIE N. CHIN

Jessie N. Chin died Monday, May 14, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 85.

Born in Grace, Mr. Chin had lived in Vicksburg most of his life. He was a retired farmer and veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alice Chin.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Chin; a daughter, Danielle Chin of Vicksburg; a stepson, James O. Green of Vicksburg; five grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

CHESTER GRAY

Services for Chester Gray will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at Williams Funeral Service.

Mr. Gray died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 77.

He was retired from Anderson-Tully Co.

He is survived by nieces including Alma J. Hayes, Doris Robinson and Brenda Hayes, all of Vicksburg; a nephew, Charleston Hayden of Vicksburg; and other relatives and friends including Lena Powell, Jesse “7 Up” Smith, Clyde Smith and James Scott.

EVELYN KING SHAIFER

PORT GIBSON Evelyn King Shaifer died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 72.

Mrs. Shaifer was a member of Magnolia M.B. Church, where she was also on the mother board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Will” Shaifer; her parents, Herbert “Tobe” King and Lizzie Watson; and a brother, Johnny King.

She is survived by seven sons, Carl Shaifer of Orlando, Fla., Herbert Shaifer of Memphis, Dewey Shaifer and Calvin Shaifer, both of Vicksburg, Johnny Shaifer of Madison, J.H. Shaifer of Jackson and Michael Shaifer of Port Gibson; three daughters, Billie J. Hooker of Dover, Del., Henrietta Dorsey-Jackson of Port Gibson and Sadie R. Clark of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a sister, Ethel Mae Edwards of Moss Point; 58 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Scott’s Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

JAMES HENRY SULLIVAN JR.

James Henry Sullivan Jr. died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. He was 79.

Mr. Sullivan was a Vicksburg native and retired to Robertsdale, Ala., in 1985. He attended St. Aloysius High School and entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1939. He later worked as a chef, restaurant owner and food manager.

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and had served as sacristan at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Robertsdale. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Ola Sullivan of Vicksburg; one son, Charles Livingston of Foley, Ala.; two daughters, Marjorie Martin and Geraldine McPhail, both of Vicksburg; a sister, Ruth Sullivan McGraw of Vicksburg; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and other relatives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas McGing officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral home with Rosary at 6:30.

Pallbearers will be Joe Adams, George S. Jones, Garnet Van Norman, Frank J. Weaver II, Gene Henegan and Jim Parkin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Tacke, Joe Canizaro, Dr. George Habeeb, Sid Tucker, Alvin Harrison, Edward Kane and Aaron Cosby.
