[06/12/01] Authorities were investigating, but believe the death of a 4-year-old, shot by a 14-year-old Monday in rural Madison Parish, was accidental.

The 4-year-old was identified by Sheriff Larry Cox as Bryon Boutwell.

The sheriff said the children were at a residence on Louisiana 577, eight miles south of Waverly, and many other people were at the house.

The 14-year-old took a rifle from the residence, Cox said, and the two were walking near a river when the rifle was fired. No charges have been filed, Cox said.

Cox said based on what visitors to the residence and witnesses at the scene said, investigators believe the shooting was unintentional. He said his department is awaiting autopsy reports before making an official ruling.

Bryon was taken by ambulance to Delhi Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Community Memorial Funeral Home in Winnsboro, La., is in charge of arrangements.
