KARLA M. ANDREWS

Karla M. Andrews died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 80.

Mrs. Andrews was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg. She was the daughter of the late Gus H. and Josie R. Newman Smith. A homemaker, she was a member of the Home Demonstration Club for over 50 years. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ray Andrews Sr., two brothers and a grandchild.

Survivors include her son, James R. “Jimmy” Andrews Jr. of Vicksburg; her daughter, Jackie A. Rushing of Vicksburg; her sister, Rosalie Tierney of Fredrick, Md.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. James O’Riordan officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Lee Brown, Allen Felker, Charles Haley, John Cleary, David Dailey and Johnny Barnes.

Honorary pallbearers will be Luther Warnock, Tommy Gordon Jr., George Cronia, Clyde Donnell, Eddie Smith Sr. and Ken Grogan Sr.

M.C. BOOKER

ROXIE, Miss. M.C. Booker died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Meadville. He was 61.

Born in Franklin County, Mr. Booker was a resident of Roxie. He was a retired laborer with J.P. Plating Manufacturing Plant in Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Carrie Fleming Booker; a brother, Nolan Booker; and a sister, Beatrice Keys.

Survivors include his son, Billy Nelson of Roxie; two sisters, Ruthie Muhammad and Lida Booker, both of Roxie; a grandson, Marcus Nelson of Roxie; and other relatives, including Monroe Fleming of New Orleans, Lillie Lee of Bude and Walter Ike Smith of Kirby.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Kirby with the Rev. August Washington officiating. Burial will follow at Byrd Cemetery in Lorman.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Tuesday at the church.

BENJAMIN W. CROWDER

Benjamin W. Crowder died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. He was 94.

Born in Hinds County, Mr. Crowder retired from the Chevrolet Division of General Motors in Flint, Mich., in 1963 before moving back to Vicksburg. He was a member of King Solomon M.B. Church where he was a deacon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Glevena Crowder; and his daughter, Ruth Richardson.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and other relatives, including Carrie Baity of Edwards.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

PAUL W. PIERCE JR.

Services for Paul W. Pierce Jr. were today at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Biedenharn officiating. Burial followed at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Pierce died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. He was 84.

He was a native of Greenville and has been a resident of Vicksburg since 1951. He was a Methodist. He was an inspector, and then engineer, on construction of numerous water control projects in the tri-state area. He was engineer-in-charge on construction of the new Vicksburg Floodwall and the Vicksburg Harbor Project, and design coordinator for the Degray Dam and Power Plant in Ark. He retired from the Vicksburg District of the Corps of Engineers in 1975 after 40 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah S. Pierce; and his parents Paul W. Pierce Sr. and Thelma C. Pierce.

He is survived by a son, Dr. Paul W. Pierce III of Vicksburg; a daughter, Becky P. Ross of Lafayette, La.; two sisters, Margaret P. Tucker, and Elizabeth P. Wingo, both of Greenville, Miss.; five grandchildren, Debbie Ross Landry, and Brent Ross, both of Lafayette, Jerre Ross of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Paul W. Pierce IV of Jackson, and Sam Pierce of Clinton; and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jerre Ross, Brent Ross, Paul Pierce IV, and Sam Pierce.

SARAH JOSEPHINE SHIELDS

GIBRALTAR, Mich. Sarah Joseph-ine Shields died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Oakwood Hospital-Seaway Center in Gibraltar. She was 66.

Born in Pattison, Mrs. Shields was a former resident of Port Gibson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elliott Shields; and her parents, Joseph and Nonnie Parker Baker; two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include four daughters, Sandra Ashely of Gibraltar, Hazle Pluff of Trenton, Mich., Wanita Izatt of Independence, Mo., and Johnny Carol Roy of Eagle Lake; her brother, James Baker of Walker, La.; her sister, Hazle Evans of Gibraltar; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Guions-Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson. Burial will follow at Unity Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
