JANIE FOOTE GARDNER

Services for Janie Foote Gardner will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Pilate officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Gardner died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at her home. She was 92.

An educator for more than 35 years in Vicksburg Public Schools, Mrs. Gardner taught at Magnolia and McIntyre schools and retired from Grove Street School in 1973.

She was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she served as church pianist and organist. In 1999, she was presented the Golden Service Award for a lifetime of commitment and service to the church.

Mrs. Gardner was a graduate of Alcorn State University, a life member of the Alcorn State University Alumni Association, a founding member of the Vicksburg Negro Business & Professional Women’s Club, a delegate from Vicksburg to the National Education Association Meeting in 1970 and a member of Mayor Joe Loviza’s Committee on the Quality of Life in Vicksburg. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

The youngest child of Fulton V. and Bettie McAllister Foote, she was married to the late Glover Gardner.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Bettye J. Gardner of Washington, D.C.; a niece, Dorothy Lewis of Tulsa, Okla.; four great-nieces, Brenda Mumford of Oklahoma City, Okla., Phyllis Saunders of Tulsa, Okla., Camille Thomas and Ann Thomas, both of Berwyn, Pa.; two great-nephews, Paul Thomas and Joseph Thomas, also of Berwyn; and a cousin, Zelma Stennis of Los Angeles.

NORMAN JONES JR.

NATCHEZ Norman Jones Jr. died Friday, June 22, 2001, in Natchez. He was 69.

Born in Natchez, Mr. Jones attended Natchez Public Schools. He was a retired employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was employed with Palace Cab and a member of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Jones of Natchez; two daughters, Norma J. Reed of Vicksburg and Bobbie Ann Cook of Denver, Colo.; three sons, Norman E. Jones of Vicksburg, Robert A. Jones of Huntsville, Ala., and Tony Byrd of Natchez; her sister, Edith J. Anderson of Natchez; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shiloh M.B. Church in Natchez with the Rev. Percy Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Natchez National Cemetery with Webb Funeral Home officiating.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Larry Davis, Albert Davis, Ralph Jennings, Joe Patterson, L.C. Jenkins and Ray Thomas.

ROBERTA ANDERSON LEE

EDWARDS Roberta Anderson Lee died Monday, June 25, 2001, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 95.

A homemaker, Mrs. Lee was a lifelong resident of Edwards. She was a member of Edwards Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G.W. Lee Sr.; her parents, Harvey and Addie P’Poole Anderson; two sisters, Rozelle Gill and Elizabeth Bayley; and a brother, Elbert Anderson.

Survivors include her son, Wilkins Lee of Vicksburg; her daughter, Carolyn Tabb of Raymond; two grandchildren, Cory Tabb of Byram and Susan Hataway of Raymond; five great-grandchildren and other relatives, including Barbara Lee of Vicksburg and John Tabb of Raymond.

Services were Wednesday at Edwards Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
