[06/29/01] A woman has died and her son remains severely injured after Thursday night single-vehicle wreck on U.S. 61 as the two were headed to their Arkansas home.

Brenda Farnham, 42, and 15-year-old Nicholas Ryan Farnham were driving to Dumas around 7:15 p.m. when their Toyota left the road near the Warren-Issaquena line and started rolling.

Sgt. Dane Davenport of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol said the Farnhams were headed north when she lost control of the vehicle and hit some gravel on the right shoulder.

“I think she must have over-corrected and then the vehicle swerved into the southbound lane and went off the road,” Davenport said.

The silver 4Runner, which was a few feet past the Issaquena County line, flipped several times and landed upside down, pinning the mother and son in the car, Davenport said.

Warren County Coroner John Thomason said Brenda Farnham, who was clinging to life at the scene, was pronounced dead on arrival at ParkView Regional Medical Center at 9:08 p.m.

Her son was taken to ParkView and later airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson where he was in critical condition Friday morning.

Personnel from Warren County along with Issaquena County deputies responded to the scene.

At one time authorities thought another passenger may have been thrown into an adjacent cornfield, Davenport said.

“Ms. Farnham was asking for someone named Tracy, so the fields were searched,” he said.

Passers-by jumped into action and helped rescue personnel search the surrounding field. It was determined no one else was in the vehicle after family members in Arkansas were contacted.

Thomason said Farnham’s body will be taken to Spring Lake, Ark., where her parents live.
