BROTHER FARREL LORIO S.C.

NEW ORLEANS Brother Farrel Lorio, S.C., died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, in New Orleans. He was 74.

A native of Baton Rouge, Brother Farrel was the son of the late Cornelia Eve Gomez and Joseph A. Lorio Sr. Born Harold Raphael Lorio, Brother Farrel entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1941. He taught at St. Aloysius High School in Vicksburg and at schools in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mobile, Ala., Montgomery, Ala., Thibodaux, La., and New Orleans. Since 1971, he had ministered as an ordained Brother of the Sacred Heart. He had lived in Bay St. Louis and was a resident of Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Byrtie Lorio.

Survivors include three brothers, Ferrrell Lorio, Ray Lorio and Joseph A. Lorio Jr.; and a sister, Mrs. Byrle Sterba.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans with prayers at 9:15. Visitation will also be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus High School Chapel in Bay St. Louis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 4 p.m. Burial will be at Brothers of the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bay St. Louis under the direction of All Faiths Funeral Home in New Orleans and Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis.

LEILA MAE MARSHALL

RAYMOND Leila Mae Marshall died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 75.

A homemaker, Mrs. Marshall was born in Vicksburg. She was a 1943 graduate of Culkin Academy. She and her husband pastored for more than 40 years in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, South Carolina and Mississippi. She was a member of Richland United Pentecostal Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Leila Hartley Conrad; three brothers, Leroy Conrad, George Conrad and Ashford Conrad; three sisters, Estes Cowart, Louise Stephenson and Marie Williams.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Tom Marshall of Raymond; her son, the Rev. Gary Marshall of Jasper, Texas; three daughters, Gayle Ellard of Greenville, Brenda Delmas of Richton and Dawn Graves of Laward, Texas; two sisters, Betty Beard of Vicksburg and Agnes Gregory of Chunchula, Ala.; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at United Pentecostal Church, Mississippi District Campground in Raymond with the Revs. Floyd Odom and G.R. Travis officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at the church in Raymond.

Pallbearers will be the Rev. Don Haymon, the Rev. Steven Cantu, Samuel Kelly, the Rev. Gene Delmas, Jerry Martin, Ryan Graves, Reid Graves and David Gainey.

WALTER L. RICHIE JR.

Walter L. Richie Jr. died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. He was 62.

Mr. Richie was a native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg. He retired as an engineer for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad after 28 years of service. He participated in area baseball leagues. He was a member of the New Christian Fellowship Church in Port Gibson.

He is survived by two sons, Walter L. Richie III and Johnny Richie, both of Vicksburg; his daughter, Jeannie Richie Jenkins of Vicksburg; his brother, Roger D. Richie of Vicksburg; five grandchildren and other relatives, including Frances McTaggart, Robert McBroom and Lelia Shingler, all of Vicksburg.

Services will be at noon Saturday at New Vision Worship Center with the Rev. Randy Burge officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Randy Carpenter, Johnny Barrentine, Charles Shingler, R.G. Hollowell, Jimmy Veazey and F.G. Norwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be H.C. Sibley, Neil Thomas, Richard Marble and active and retired employees of Illinois Central Gulf Railroad.

DOROTHY STEWART SLAUGHTER

Services for Dorothy Stewart Slaughter will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gospel Temple M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Service.

Mrs. Slaughter died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 56.

She was a member of Gospel Temple M.B. Church. She was a food service manager for Jubilee and a cosmetologist.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Stewart; and her grandmother, Lillian Hall.

She is survived by her husband, Bennie Slaughter of Vicksburg; three daughters, Carolyn Wells and Valeria Newton, both of Vicksburg, and Yolanda Bailey of Huntsville, Ala.; two sons, Robert Robertson and Vincent Robertson, both of Vicksburg; her mother, Daisy Mae Smith of Vicksburg; six sisters, Lillian Limbrick of Marlboro, Md., Linda Burnside of Hollandale, Patrick Cole and Wendy Scott, both of Vicksburg, Mamie Smith and Diane Harvey, both of Las Vegas; two brothers, Richard Scott and Jordan Smith Jr., both of Vicksburg; 13 grandchildren, a great-grandchild and other relatives.

J.D. SLAUGHTER

J.D. “Babe Ruth” Slaughter died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 71.

A lifelong resident of the Eagle Lake community, Mr. Slaughter was a retired farmer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Abraham Slaughter Sr.; his mother, Elena Slaughter; a brother, Elijah Slaughter; and a sister, Rubena Gray.

Survivors include four sons, J.D. Slaughter Jr. of Eagle Lake, Baxter Slaughter of Chicago and Eric Lee Slaughter and Frederick Miller, both of Vicksburg; six daughters, Katie Brown, Martha Slaughter and Mary Richardson, all of Chicago, Verda Sanchez and Ruthie Qualls, both of Vicksburg, and Judy Slaughter of Vallejo, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Sandra Slaughter and Rosie White, both of Vicksburg; one stepson, Jimmy Ross of Vicksburg; a brother, Abraham Slaughter Jr. of Memphis; two sisters, Iola Epps of Vicksburg and Katie Ervins of Joliet, Ill.; 23 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives, including Terry Slaughter, Zelmarine Murphy and Patricia Segrest, all of Vicksburg.
