MARGIE L. BASS

Margie L. Bass died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 63.

Mrs. Bass was born in Jeff Davis County and had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1962. She was formerly employed by the LeTourneau grocery store. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Johnny Bass of Vicksburg; two sons, Randy Bass and Keith Bass, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Cindy Grantham of Vicksburg; three brothers, Jimmy Sanders of West, Danny Sanders of New Hebron and Billy Sanders of Hickory; four sisters, Caroline Peavy of Jackson and Bobbi Seals, Betty Mullens and Linda Hodges, all of New Hebron; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Dunaway officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Timmy Peavy, Danny Peavy, Billy Brown, Venable Moore, Larry Bass, Cody Bass, Keith Allen Bass and David Cochran.

REV. COLLINS FRAZIER

UTICA The Rev. Collins Frazier died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in Saginaw, Mich. He was 100.

Rev. Frazier was born in Utica and lived in Rolling Fork most of his life before moving to Saginaw 20 years ago.

He is survived by 11 children, including Annie Hoye-Montgomery of Utica; and 521 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John M.B. Church in Utica. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

EVELYN F. SCOTT HOPKINS

Services for Evelyn F. Scott Hopkins will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Heroden M.B. Church with the Rev. L.A. Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon Wednesday until the service at the church.

Mrs. Hopkins died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Detroit. She was 74.

Mrs. Hopkins formerly lived in Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Evelyn Scott; three brothers, Robert Scott, George Scott and Eugene Scott; and a sister, Margaret Thomas.

She is survived by a son, Carl A. Scott Sr. of Korea; two daughters, Marilyn Stewart and Nina Momon, both of Detroit; a sister, Mamie Spellman of Vicksburg; and three brothers, Charles Scott and Eddie Scott, both of Vicksburg, and James Scott of New Orleans.

LT. COL. ROBERT E. SIMONO

DIAMONDHEAD Lt. Col. Robert E. Simono died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at his home in Diamondhead. He was 85.

Lt. Col. Simono was a retired World War II B-17 Eighth Air Force pilot. He held the American Distinguished Flying Cross and the Maroon wings from the French government.

He was born in Two Rivers, Wis., and attended the University of Wisconsin before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was sent to Greenville to train pilots, and he flew missions over Germany out of Chelveston, England. He and his family lived in Germany and southern France as part of the American military government.

After leaving active duty, he lived in various Mississippi areas including Vicksburg, Port Gibson, Laurel and Diamondhead.

Lt. Col. Simono was a 1942 graduate of Kelly Air Force Base, past officer of the Hancock County Coast Guard Auxiliary, a Presbyterian elder and co-founder of the Diamondhead Community Church of the PCUSA.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother, Charlie Simono.

Survivors include his wife, Seabelle Lee Simono of Diamondhead; a daughter and son-in-law; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at National Cemetery in Biloxi. A memorial service will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Diamondhead Community Church.

Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Riemann Funeral Home, 229 Highway 90, in Bay St. Louis.

VERNA W. CARPENTER WALLS

Verna W. Carpenter Walls died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 84.

Mrs. Walls was a member of St. Peter A.M.E. Church in Port Gibson. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Dillard University in New Orleans and a master’s degree in English from DePaul University in Chicago. She taught at the former Cherry Street School in Vicksburg and retired as a teacher from King High School in Chicago after 50 years of service.

She was a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Mu Chapter, Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, National Perkinson’s Foundation, Dillard Alumni Association and the Retired Teachers Association of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Walls; her parents, Scott and Georgia Trevillion Carpenter; and a sister, Julia Mae Carpenter.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth Robinson of Port Gibson; a brother, Aaron Carpenter of Grambling, La.; nieces, including Renetta W. Howard of Port Gibson; and nephews.

IRVIN WILSON JR.

Irvin Wilson Jr. died Monday, July 16, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 82.

Mr. Wilson was born in Hermanville and retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station after 25 years of service. He was also an Army veteran of World War II. He was a deacon and trustee of Mount Olive M.B. Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jones Wilson of Vicksburg; five sons, Harold White of St. Louis, Irvin Wilson III of Downey, Calif., Gregory Wilson of Jackson, Thomas James Wilson of Cypress, Calif., and Frederick M. Wilson of Vicksburg; six daughters, Verna L. Whitaker, Jenny V. Drake and Linda J. Collins, all of Vicksburg, Rose M. Wilson of Los Angeles, Evan I. Morales of Southgate, Calif., and Sarah G. Raupp of Columbia, Md.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces; nephews; and other relatives.
