[07/17/01] A big night by Otis Stamps, and a bad one by Vicksburg’s pitchers, helped the Warren Central Juniors beat their archrivals, 13-6.

Stamps went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Vicksburg threw six wild pitches to help WC score seven runs to break a seventh-inning tie Monday night, the first of three meetings between the rivals this week.

WC’s Kyle Gordon got the rally started with a leadoff single.

Two wild pitches helped him get over to third before Zach Balthrop hit into a groundout RBI to score the go-ahead run. Four more wild pitches helped score the other six runs. Stamps drove in two in the inning. John Rice Pettway and Vaughn Mims both had an RBI.

“Our kids did a good job staying invovled in the game,” WC coach Randy Broome said. “They did a good job staying agressive at the plate.”

WC jumped on Vicksburg in the first after Stamps hit a triple. He scored on an error one batter later. Mims scored later on an overthrow to give WC the 2-0 lead.

Vicksburg answered in the bottom half on Nathan Baylot’s RBI double. He later scored on an error to knot the game at 2-2.

WC took the lead in the second off an RBI single by Stamps.

Vicksburg got the run back in the third inning and in the fourth got an RBI sacrifice fly by Justin Stokes in the third and a run-scoring bunt by Chip Lofton in the fouth giving Vicksburg a 4-3 lead.

WC had a three-run sixth to take a 6-4 lead off an RBI double by Jake Turner and a two-RBI single by Mark Different.

Vicksburg answered as Ben Shelton drove in a run and scored on an overthrow to home plate, tying the game again at 6-6 before WC’s seven-run seventh.

Vicksburg was led by Shelton and Stokes, both with two RBIs.

“Our pitching did good tonight,” Broome said. “Darryl (Harper) was shaky at first, but he stayed in there and got it done.

“Vaughn (Mims) did a good job in relief.”
