Swinging through summer

Published 12:00 am Thursday, July 19, 2001

Whiling away the hot hours of the day, two groups fought the sultry summer temperatures Wednesday in two ways. Above, Lester Haynes, 15, cools off Dalphine Smith, 19, as Chanel Hargroves, 16, tackles Delon Haynes, 13, in the spray of a water hose near Ralph’s Convenience Store on Pearl Street. The group of young entrepreneurs operating their car wash said they were going to use the money to help the community. Below, Anna Fletcher, 4, carefully walks a balance beam while her mother, Liz Fletcher, watches from a nearby bench at the Vicksburg Riverfront Park. Fletcher took Anna and her best friend, Avery Parman, 4, daughter of Pam and Billy Parman, to the park to play before lunch and the heat of the day. The National Weather Service was predicting a chance of storms Thursday night and Friday with temperatures still climbing into the mid-90s. (The Vicksburg Post/MELANIE DUNCAN/CHAD APPLEBAUM)
