Doing the deep dive

Published 12:00 am Friday, July 20, 2001

Vicksburg Police Sgt. Jon Carter, above right, watches Glen Roe as the patrolman presses a regulator to his mouth Thursday night at City Pool as officers practiced diving for Vicksburg Police Department Dive Team certification. Patrolmen Clay Griffin and Chad Higginbotham were helping Roe stay under water during his first diving attempt. Below, Deputy Chief Frank Phelps, standing rear left, watches as, from left, Carter, Roe, Higginbotham and Griffin prepare for a dive. The department currently has two certified divers, Carter and Patrolman Virdell Lewis, and Phelps said two more are needed. The certification process takes about three weeks and the certifications are granted by a company in Jackson. The photographs were made with an underwater camera. (The Vicksburg Post/CHAD APPLEBAUM)
