[07/20/01] Two Warren County residents, one accused of gunning a man down on Mundy Street, were arraigned Thursday after being indicted by the Warren County grand jury.
Reginald Carter, 23, 1717 Poplar St., was indicted on a murder charge in the April 18 shooting death of 32-year-old James Turner.
Carter pleaded not guilty to the charge. His case is set to go to trial Aug. 27.
Carter is accused of shooting Turner four times while the two were at a barbecue in front of a Mundy Street home.
Witnesses at the home that night said Turner was breaking up a fight between two women when he began fighting with Carter’s brother, 19-year-old Terren Carter.
A few minutes later, witnesses said, Reginald Carter shot Turner four times while standing in the street.
Carter, who remains in the Warren County Jail, was also indicted on a charge as a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.
The charge in one of the indictments made public Thursday said that 29-year-old Edward Wells, 10 Hilcrest Drive, Natchez, committed aggravated assault with extreme indifference in the attack of Patricia Rabb, 29, also of Natchez.
Rabb was left paralyzed after being beaten and then thrown off a 25-foot embankment on U.S. 61 North on July 21.
Rabb was found the next day by construction workers two miles north of Vicksburg. She spent several months in the intensive care unit of a Jackson hospital before returning to Natchez.
In Warren County Circuit Court Thursday, Wells waived his right to be arraigned and pleaded innocent to the charge.
Wells, who remains in the Warren County Jail, was arrested June 8 after avoiding Warren County authorities for more than 11 months.
He was also on probation for a simple robbery charge in Natchez at the time of his arrest. His probation has been revoked on that charge, and he was ordered to serve five years in prison.
Further investigation by Warren County authorities also unearthed that Wells is wanted in Texas on charges of aggravated assault and grand theft.
Wells is set to go to trial Sept. 10 on the aggravated assault charge.
Others arraigned after being indicted by the grand jury are:
Ronald Conner, 34, 2323 Lake St., burglary of a dwelling.
Charles R. Reed, 19, 1102 Candee St., sale of controlled substance.
Rodney D. Turner, 28, 820 Harris St., sale of controlled substance.
