[07/31/01] A Port Gibson woman and another woman remained in a Jackson hospital this morning after being injured in one of two Jefferson County wrecks that killed three people.

Dapravious Wheat, no age available, and Elle Sampson, no age or address available, were in stable condition at University Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.

Wheat was a passenger in a car driven by Peggy Dotson, 43, of Fayette, who was killed friday afternoon when her car collided with an Oldsmobile driven by Jerry Ann Burnett, 51, of Fayette, who also was killed, Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker said. Sampson was a passenger in Burnett’s car.

Walker said he did not know the types of vehicles involved in the wreck or the circumstances surrounding it.

He said the accident occurred at about 2:30 on U.S. 61 South a few miles from Lorman.

About 30 minutes later, another Fayette resident, 64-year-old Garland Nevels was killed and his wife, Rena C. Nevels, 63, was injured when their Nissan collided with an 18-wheel log truck driven by Anthony Tenner.

Walker said the wreck was on Mississippi 20 just east of Fayette, but he didn’t know how the wreck happened.

Tenner, 27, of Fayette, and Mrs. Nevels were treated at the scene, Walker said.

The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol investigated both wrecks, but no one was available for comment this morning.
