ETHEL L. YEATS DAY

MONROE Ethel L. Yeats Day died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at her home in Monroe, La. She was 88.

Mrs. Day was born in Oak Grove and had lived in Monroe for 69 years. She was a seamstress and a member of First Apostolic Church for 21 years.

She is survived by her son, Thomas D. “Sonny” Day of Monroe; a daughter, Helen Louise Antley of Phoenix; a brother, Otha Yeats of Monroe; a sister, Eloise Stringer of Clarksdale; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Apostolic Church in Monroe with the Rev. Ralph Endsley officiating. Burial will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe.

Pallbearers will be John Hardin, Mark Hardin, Kendall Walker, Tony Walker, Devoughan Day and Ricky Day.

Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah has charge of the arrangements.

ELAINE NASSEMA FARRIS HUGHES

A memorial service for Elaine Nassema Farris Hughes will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Bill Livingston officiating.

Mrs. Hughes died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, in Newport Beach, Calif. She was 65.

She was a college English and writing professor in New York and Mississippi for 25 years. She also wrote and published several books, including “Writing from the Inner Self,” and she taught Living with Breast Cancer workshops at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, Calif. She also performed as a jazz singer.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by two sons, James Archie Hughes III and David Farris Hughes, both of Vicksburg; a brother, Joseph David Farris Jr. of Irvine, Calif.; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

CHARLES J. POWELL

Charles J. “Jay Bird” Powell died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 82.

Mr. Powell was born in Laurel and lived in Vicksburg for most of his life. He had been the owner and operator of Powell’s Place since 1948. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the American Watchmakers Institute and was a licensed jeweler. He was an inventor with a U.S. patent, a Civil War memorabilia collector, an honorary special deputy of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department and a founder of Porters Chapel Academy. He was also a member of Bowmar Avenue Baptist Church.

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret E. Powell; and his parents, Alonzo W. and Mamie Ellis Powell.

He is survived by his daughters, Charlotte P. DiRago and Mary Sibley, both of Vicksburg, and Lydia P. Simon of Baton Rouge; a brother, Benjamin W. Powell of Greenville; a sister, Anita Christine Powell of Vicksburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Revs. Terry White and Lynette Little officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jim Sills, Gary Rickles, Jason Sills, Jeff Loney, John McGarrah and Leroy Williams.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Flanagan, John Edwards, Dr. Eugene Ferris, Paul Barrett, George Hall, Hugh Wilkinson and Dr. Walter Johnston Jr.

PINK WILLIAMS

LAS VEGAS Pink Williams died Monday, July 30, 2001, at his home in Las Vegas. He was 76.

Mr. Williams was born in Jefferson County and was a retired auto mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rance Williams and Tlytha Vessel.

He is survived by three sons, Paul Williams of New Orleans, Arthur Lee Sims of Bude and Kevin Warren of San Diego; two daughters, Patricia Warren of Texas City, Texas, and Janice Williams of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Mary L. Williams of Albany, N.Y.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Crown Point United Methodist Church in Fayette with the Rev. F.L. Pendleton officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Point Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 until 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rollins Funeral Home Chapel in Port Gibson.
