CHARLES A. ASKINGS

Charles A. Askings died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 94.

Mr. Askings, an Illinois native, was a retired riverboat pilot and a gardener. He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Muriel Askings; his wife, Vernice Askings; and a son, C.A. Askings Jr.

Survivors include three grandsons, Tommy Askings of Fort Worth, Texas, C.A. Askings of Springfield, Mo., and John Askings of Florida; one nephew, Elmer Mullen of Slidell, La.; and two nieces, Ruby Williams of Metairie, La., and Lillie Mae Matherne of New Orleans.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. E.L. Sharpe officiating.

Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 today until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ray Wilson, Tully Wilson, Floyd Noble, George Ameen, Kenneth Harrell and Elmer Hill.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

DORIS MAXINE GRIFFIN

Doris Maxine Griffin died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at her home. She was 57.

Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by her father, Leyome Preacely Sr.; a brother, Leyome Preacely Jr.; and a sister, Martha P. Martin.

She is survived by her mother, Julia Preacely of Vicksburg; a brother, Leon Preacely of Vicksburg; a sister, Artimease Preacely of Chicago; nieces; nephews; and other relatives, including Sara Pinkney of Vicksburg.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

LUCILLE P. McCLEAVE

Lucille P. McCleave died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 87.

Born in Natalbany, La., Mrs. McCleave had been a Vicksburg resident for most of her life. She retired as secretary and bookkeeper for the Merchants Company after 17 years of service.

She was a member and pianist at First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas D. and Katie Thames Prestridge.

Survivors include a daughter, Patty Kay Bates of Vicksburg; a grandson, Michael A. Elliott of Hattiesburg; two great-grandchildren, Charles B. Elliott of Alexandria, La., and Katarina L. Elliott of Auburn, Ala.; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Hansell Bankester officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Polk, Jeff Montgomery, Barry McCleave, Randall Gay, Henry Bordelon, Gary Dill, Don Murrell and Sam Heltzel.

JEWELL I. SHAVER

Jewell I. Shaver died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Heritage House Nursing Home. She was 91.

Mrs. Shaver was born in Alabama and was a member of the I-20 Church of Christ. After retiring as a seamstress from the House of Fashion, she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jiles and Maud Coker Timmons, and a daughter, Geneva Shaver.

She is survived by her husband, Bedford M. Shaver of Vicksburg; one daughter, Annette S. Stutzman of Baja, Calif.; her sister, Quay Hensley of Oxford; a grandson, Robert Lorenze of Glendale, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with Tony Lalli and Reggie Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be I-20 Church of Christ deacons, Chestley Nash, Oren Reeves, Bill Thornton, Rhea Fuller, Hugh Allen and John Campbell.

Honorary pallbearer will be Cindy McKay.
