BERTHA LEE CARSON

UTICA Bertha Lee “Stute” Carson died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 65.

Born in Hinds County, Miss Carson was employed with the Jackson Hinds Comprehensive Health Center in Utica. She was a member of New Oak Ridge Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sharkey and Minnie Lee Carson; two sisters, Annie Mae Carson-Seaton and Ida Bell Carson.

She is survived by five sons, Jimmy Carson of Utica, Douglas Carson and Carl Carson, both of Vicksburg, and Larry Carson and Fulton Carson, both of Jackson; five daughters, Linda Carson of Jackson, Brenda Carson and Stephanie Carson-Huband, both of Vicksburg, Nicholle M. Carson and Kendra Carson-Flowers, both of Utica; three brothers, James W. “Porter” Carson, James C. “Doc Twin” Carson and Ozell Carson, all of Utica; seven sisters, Virlene Carson-Fisher, Josephine Carson-Richards and Barbara Carson-Lee, all of Utica, Lorraine Carson-Turner and Carrie Carson-Wilson, both of Chicago, Nettie Carson-Terry of Fort Worth, Texas, Arlene Burse of Vicksburg; grandchildren and other relatives.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Belmont M.B. Church in Utica. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home.

COY D. FLANAGAN SR.

Coy D. Flanagan Sr. died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 79.

Born in Le Panto, Ark., Mr. Flanagan had lived in Leflore County before moving to Vicksburg in 1953. He owned and operated Flanagan’s Grocery for 20 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl T. Flanagan.

Survivors include four sons, Coy D. Flanagan Jr., Mike Flanagan, Todd Flanagan and Mack Flanagan, all of Vicksburg; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Oster Daniels officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Barfield, Karl Ehrhardt, Kurt Ehrhardt, Keith Ehrhardt, David Conerly and Eddie Lynn.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Anita Tribble, Cindy Guest, Peggy Demeranville and Bill Harris.

FRANCES K. LANIER

Frances K. Lanier died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 69.

A native of Tallulah, Mrs. Lanier graduated from the Sisters of Mercy Nursing School. She worked as a registered nurse at Mercy and Vicksburg hospitals for more than 25 years. She taught nursing classes at Hinds Junior College for several years before working for Haworth Home Health until her retirement in 1994.

Mrs. Lanier was a member of the Nurses Service Organization and St. Paul Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Andrew and Cleta Rhynehart Krueger; her husband, Roy M. Lanier Jr.; and a brother, John M. Krueger.

Survivors include three daughters, Gail L. Mason and Janis Lanier, both of Vicksburg, and Leah Ann Stockman of Laurel; one son, Clarence Lanier of Vicksburg; five sisters, Mary K. Doss of Huntsville, Ala., Mable K. Monk of Baton Rouge, Ruby K. Zuskind of San Antonio, Texas, Ann K. Pettit of Charlotte, N.C., and Florence K. Muller of Otseco, Mich.; one brother, Ernest Krueger of Vicksburg; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas McGing officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Paul Koestler, Paul Monk, David Lanier, Mike Monk, Marc Lutz and George Mason.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle Signa and Conan Signa.

JOSHUA RYAN SANDERS

Joshua Ryan Sanders, infant son of Sherri L. Sanders of Vicksburg, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at University Medical Center in Jackson.

In addition to his mother, Joshua is survived by his maternal grandparents, Alvin and Josephine Sanders, and other relatives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. John H. Wills Sr. officiating.
