North roadwork coming

[8/30/2001]As work continues on Interstate 20 in the Vicksburg area, the Department of Transportation has awarded a contract for a big job on U.S. 61 North.

For most of the summer, the I-20 project has been under way from the Mississippi River Bridge past the Clay Street interchanges. All four lanes are being overlayed with asphalt after potholes are punched out and new concrete is poured.

A spokesman for MDOT’s District 3 office said the project is nearly complete.

On Wednesday, Central District Commissioner Dick Hall announced the department had awarded a contract to APAC-Mississippi Inc. to improve U.S. 61 from Redwood in Warren County, through Issaquena County and to Onward in Sharkey.

Hall said the company bid $2,786,829.60 for work on the 19.3-mile stretch. The work will consist of milling the surface and then overlaying it.

The beginning date of the contract is Sept. 14, and work should begin shortly after that, depending on APAC’s work schedule. The contract calls for the work to be complete by May.

Hall said the road will stay open during the work.
