[9/18/01]One week after unexpectedly leaving the team, St. Aloysius senior quarterback Dan Muirhead returned to the Flashes on Monday.

“We just had a chance to talk, and we’re glad to have him back. He was just a little disenchanted about his playing time in the last game. He said he realized he made too quick a decision,” St. Al coach Jim Taylor said. “He came back without any promises or such, and there’s just an understanding that we’re going to work together to do the best we could.”

Muirhead, who started St. Al’s opener against Greenville-St. Joe and also played during the third quarter, played only one quarter of the Flashes’ second game, a 12-0 win over St. Andrew’s.

Junior Chad Cox, who led the offense on two scoring drives in the 23-10 win over St. Joe, started against St. Andrew’s and played three quarters in that game.

Muirhead said the disappointment over having less playing time led to his decision to leave the team. He quickly changed his mind after missing Friday’s game against Mount Olive, however.

“I should’ve thought it through a little better,” said Muirhead, who is 2-for-4 for 50 yards passing this season.

Taylor said that Cox, who is 6-for-14 for 67 yards and one touchdown this season, will now see the majority of the snaps, although Muirhead will still play some.

“It gives us a little more security and stability at the quarterback position,” Taylor said. “Dan is fundamentally a very good quarterback.”

Muirhead acknowledged that he would have to work harder than ever to reclaim the top spot in the rotation, but said just getting back on the field was the most important thing to him right now.

“I don’t care where I play, I just want to be on the field,” he said. “I’ve just got to get back to really enjoying being out there.”
