JAMES WALTER BURKS

EDWARDS Services for James Walter “J.W.” Burks will be at noon Saturday at Springridge M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Henry Cemetery in Edwards under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

Mr. Burks died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at his home. He was 86.

A lifelong resident of Edwards, he was a deacon of Springridge M.B. Church. He owned and operated Burks’ Grocery Store and farmed for several years. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Marine Corps. He was a member of Joshua Rose of Sharon No. 320, Heroines of Jericho. He served on the board of directors of the Hubbard Water Association, the Farmers’ Home Association and was past worshipful master of the Rohelia Lodge No. 415, M.W. Stringer Grand Lodge. He was also an agent for Dillon Burial Association.

He is survived by his wife, Lula M. Burks of Edwards; a son, Martin Burks of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Mattie Kelly of Utica and Rose Lockett of Jackson; two grandchildren, Martin Burks Jr. and Karyn Burks, both of Bronx; three godchildren, Yolanda L. Burks and Barry Butler, both of Edwards, and Ealr Taylor of Catalina, Ga.; and other relatives including Annie Louise Tyler and Aaron Tyler, both of Jackson, and the Moody family.

ALVIN BROWN FIELDS

Services for Alvin Brown Fields will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Travelers Rest M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

Mr. Fields died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 76.

He operated Bear Camp Grocery Store in Valley Park for a number of years. He was a member of Travelers Rest M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Fields and Viola Bankston; his adoptive parents, Johnie and Laura Brown; a son, Robert “Bobo” Earl; four brothers, Robert Bankston, Harry Bankston, Roosevelt Woods and Willie Sinclair McRavin; a sister, Thelma Jackson; and a grandson, Michael Kenneth Rockhill.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Mae Fields of Valley Park; his son, Michael Kenneth Fields of Valley Park; his daughter, Betty Brown Dykes of Houston, Texas; a sister, Valenia Morris of Chicago; and six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and other relatives including the McRavin, Morris and Jackson families and Theresa Brown of Memphis.

VIVIAN McGEE HOOD

Vivian McGee Hood died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at St. Catherine Village Nursing Home in Madison. She was 87.

Born in Columbia, Mrs. Hood was the daughter of the late Eugene Allison and Alma Berryhill McGee. She was a registered nurse with the Street Sanitarium for 10 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Orley Mason Hood; her brother, Eugene Allison McGee Jr.; and two sisters, Mary George Canizaro and Catherine Ryan. In addition, her sister, Beatricia McGee Ford Lindley, also died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001.

Survivors include her daughter, Cathy Hood Phillips of Madison; two sons, Howard A. Hood of Nashville and Orley M. Hood of Brandon; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Reiber officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at Greenville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Randy Sherard, Fred Peyton, Fred Sherard, Jim Harrison, Charlie King and David Baldwin.

Honorary pallbearer will be Robert Turner.

BEATRICIA McGEE FORD LINDLEY

COVINGTON, La. Beatricia McGee Ford Lindley died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, in Covington. She was 93.

A native of Raymond, Mrs. Lindley had lived in Covington for the past 10 years.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Homer Lane Ford and Bertrand Lindley; her stepson, Frances Ford Seibert; three sisters, Mary George M. Canizaro, Cathryn M. Ryan and Eugene A. McGee Jr. In addition, her sister, Vivian McGee Hood, also died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001.

She is survived by her daughter, Lane Ford Smart of Covington; and seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sibley Cemetery in Choudrant, La.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
