[11/23/2001]A 5-year-old child and a 30-year-old man died in separate accidents in Vicksburg on Thanksgiving Day.

The child, Sarah Moore, who lived at 85 Stillwater Drive, was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m. at Vicksburg Medical Center after drowning near U.S. 61 South and Grange Hall Road, Warren County Coroner John Thomason said.

He said he believed the drowning, in a partially filled above-ground swimming pool, was an accident.

In the wreck, Billy Joe Curry, 348 Hutson St., died of internal injuries at the scene of his one-car wreck that happened at 11:16 p.m. Thursday near 295 Hutson St., off North Washington Street, Thomason said.

He said autopsies are planned at Mississippi Mortuary Services for both victims.

Patrolman Jamee Carter, community relations officer with the Vicksburg Police Department, said Patrolman Jason Wood and Detective Virdell Lewis investigated the drowning and said Sarah’s body was found by neighbors who administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The pool was at 126 Bluecreek Drive, which is parallel to Stillwater Drive. The scene of the incident and the home where Sarah Moore lived with her parents, Chandra Brown Moore and Jerry Moore, are back to back.

Carter said Lewis was continuing his investigation of the child’s death today.

In the fatal wreck, preliminary reports from Lt. David Beard, the investigating officer, indicate it happened when the car in which Curry was the only occupant struck at least one tree and overturned, Carter said, adding that Beard was continuing his investigation today.
