CARL ANDR FLOWERS

Carl Andr Flowers, chef at Andr’s Restaurant at Cedar Grove Mansion Inn since the 1992, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 44.

Best known as Chef Andr, Mr. Flowers was a native of Vicksburg and a graduate of Vicksburg High School. He attended Jackson State University, where he studied business, but his major interest was food.

“Chef Andr was one of the most popular guys in town,” Cedar Grove owner Ted Mackey said. “He had great talent and was a chef dedicated to his art.”

Friends and associates said Mr. Flowers became ill with a sinus infection last week and died of an allergic reaction to medicine.

Mr. Flowers was at one time an aerobics and dance instructor, teaching at the YMCA, and he served as a personal trainer for Miss Mississippi in 1990.

Cedar Grove’s general manager and Mr. Flowers’ longtime friend Pam Netterville said she met Flowers through their mutual interest in animals, in particular, poodles the chef’s signature companions.

“Everyone knew Chef Andr,” Netterville said. “We’d walk just a half block and at least six people would speak to him. He was greatly loved, both as a chef and as a person.”

Featured in many newspaper articles and restaurant columns, he contributed recipes to several books, including “Favorite Recipes of the South,” “Fine Dining Mississippi Style” and “Specialties of the House.”

Well known for his New Orleans cuisine with a Mississippi flair, Mr. Flowers’ best dishes included Brandy Bread Pudding and Black Forest Salmon; but his real talent, perhaps, lay in the creative display of foods for weddings and parties.

Mr. Flowers was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Flowers Sr., and two brothers, Robert Wayne Flowers, and William O. Flowers, who was an assistant principal at Vicksburg Junior High School and died in August at the age of 52.

He is survived by his mother, Geneva Bowman Flowers of Vicksburg; three brothers, Dennis Flowers Jr., and Edward J. Flowers, both of Vicksburg, and Michael Flowers of Brandon; and one sister, Gladys E. Cage of Chicago.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Triumph Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

JOHN JEWELL BALL

John Jewell “Bonus” Ball died at his home Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001. He was 70.

Mr. Ball, a native of Fayette, was the owner of Bonus Specialty, a Vicksburg business.

He was a graduate of Fayette High School and attended Louisiana State University on a football scholarship and later transferred to the University of Mississippi. Mr. Ball was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Elise and “Dad” Ball; and his son, Haley Ball.

Mr. Ball is survived by his wife, Margie Haley Ball of Vicksburg; three daughters, Lisa Ball Williams of Oxford, Kay Ball Wyman of Vicksburg and Ren Ball Morgan of Plano, Texas; his brother, Bo Ball of New Orleans; his sister, Kay Ball of Lorman; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Bryant officiating. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the church’s Ward Hall.
