DAVID ANDERSON EMERSON
UTICA David Anderson Emerson died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at University Medical Center in
Jackson. He was 69.
Mr. Emerson was a Yazoo County native. He had lived in Utica for the past 10 years and was a member of Utica Baptist Church.
He served in the Army and worked with Habitat for Humanity. He was employed by Magnolia Mobile Homes for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene J. Emerson of Utica; one son, Patrick David Emerson of Vicksburg; one daughter, Trisha Smith of Vicksburg; his mother, Mary Kate Anderson of Port Gibson; three brothers, Ray H. Emerson, K. Willis Emerson and L.T. Emerson, all of Vicksburg; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Utica Baptist Church with the Revs. John Ed Snell and Bob Hardison officiating. Burial will follow at Utica Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Thursday until the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Larry Boyd, Harold Simmons, Jack Hollingsworth, Billy Dane Newman, Doug Womack and Dillon Hutchins.
HILDA INEZ RUTH
Hilda Inez Ruth died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 84.
Mrs. Ruth, a housewife, was a native of Winston County and had lived in Vicksburg for 58 years. For 17 years, she taught Sunday school at Trinity Baptist Church and for 20 years she taught at Highland Baptist Church, where she was a member.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William T. and Nancy Elizabeth Hindman Cockrell; a daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Ruth; and two brothers and a sister.
Survivors include her husband, B.T. Ruth of Vicksburg; two daughters, Dean Ruth Haver of Duncanville, Texas, and Evelyn Ruth Bilbo of Atmore, Ala.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Revs. Brian Ivey and David Grimsley officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Robert Haver, Bob Haver, Randy Haver, Dennis Bilbo, David Bilbo, Chris Clark and Blayne Chastain.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. William Wooten, Dr. David Halinski, Joe O’Quinn, Anthony O’Neal and Bob White.
EUNICE MARIE PRIESTLY SMITH
Eunice Marie Priestly Smith died today, Jan. 9, 2002, at her home. She was 71.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Smith, and her parents, Otis and Almeda Priestly.
She is survived by five daughters, Dorothy Smith, Almeda Smith, Parlee Brown, Katie Brown and Diane Smith, all of Vicksburg; four sons, Leonard Smith Jr., Robert Smith, Otis Smith and Bernard Smith, all of Vicksburg; and 17 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
WILLIAM H. TATE
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. William H. Tate died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his home in Cartersville, Ga. He was 68.
Born in Senatobia, Mr. Tate was a Marine for 20 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Newellton.
He is survived by his wife, Winnie Rea Tate of Cartersville; three sons, William K. Tate of Monroe, La., Robert J. Tate of Logansville, Ga., and Kenneth N. Tate of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Vickie Sue Almond of Cartersville; two brothers, James C. Tate and Avery D. Tate, both of Baton Rouge; three sisters, Joyce Cutree and Beverly Cannon, both of Baton Rouge, and Therasa Watson of Walker, La.; and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with Curt Iles and Don Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
MARY LIZA THOMAS
PORT GIBSON Mary Liza Thomas died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 75.
Mrs. Thomas was a member and mother of Ashland M.B. Church in Port Gibson. She was a member of the Baptist Aid.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lillie Thomas Rose.
She is survived by a son, Oscar Thomas Jr. of Port Gibson; five daughters, Ella Thomas, Shirley Reed, Connie Thomas and Barbara Thomas, all of Port Gibson, and Sadie Thomas of Indianapolis, Ind.; four brothers, Charlie Shorter, Willie Shorter and Johnny Shorter, all of Port Gibson, and Lee Ernest Shorter of Syracuse, N.Y.; a sister, Hazel Hamilton of Port Gibson; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives, including Jessie Bruce of Rolling Fork.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ashland M.B. Church with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 6 today at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. and from noon Thursday until the service at the church.
KING EMANUEL TILLMAN
ROXIE King Emanuel Tillman died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Franklin County Hospital in Meadville. He was 98.
Mr. Tillman was born in Copiah County to the late Ammon and Rosie Lee Welch Tillman. He was a retired wood hauler.
He attended St. Paul United Methodist Church in Roxie, where he served as Sunday school superintendent for eight years and was a trustee, steward and vocal choir member.
Mr. Tillman had served as president of the Franklin County Singing Circle and was a member of W.M. Masonic Lodge of Roxie.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fairey Tillman, A.T. Tillman and Carey Tillman; two sons, Emanuel Tillman Jr. and J.C. Tillman; one daughter, Leola Tillman; and two wives, Rosie Nelson Tillman and Eloise Cameron Tillman.
Survivors include Gloristene Gibson of Roxie; two sons, Robert Tillman and Dr. J.D. Tillman, both of Roxie; two daughters, Pecolia L. Tillman Bonds of Natchez and Claudell Tillman Brown of Roxie; a sister, Pecolia Tillman Weathersby of Magee; nieces; nephews; and 21 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roy London officiating. Burial will follow at Old 16 Section Cemetery in Roxie.
Visitation will be Friday at Tyler Funeral Home in Brookhaven.
