[01/30/02]OAK GROVE Jay Harrison’s scouting report of the Oak Grove Warriors was that they were fast.

His scouting report only told part of the story.

The third-ranked Warriors (14-3-2) used blazing speed to run past Warren Central, 5-0, eliminating the Vikings (10-10) from the playoffs.

“I had heard they were fast, but I didn’t think that fast,” said Harrison, whose team fell behind 4-0 at the half. “They were the fastest team we’ve played this year.”

Oak Grove was not only fast, but aggressive as well. The Warriors took 26 shots, sent several wide and blasted one off the post to keep the game as close as it was.

Austin Lovitt, Caleb Koonce, Sam Thomas and Alex Connerly each had first-half goals as the Warriors outshot WC 17-2 in the opening half.

“Our guys played as hard as they could with a lot of heart and desire,” Harrison said.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more, especially out of our seniors.”

Luke Sellers made 11 saves and the Vikings had a few offensive chances in the second half, but were never able to convert.

“Being down 4-0 at the half against anybody is a daunting task,” Harrison said. “I told our guys to go out and win the second half.”

The teams played even soccer in the second, but Oak Grove outshot WC 7-3 and added a goal by Bubba Dedeaux with two minutes to play.

Lovitt started the scoring 13 minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Sellers made a diving stop to keep the WC deficit at one goal.

Seven minutes after that, though, the Warriors started to pull away with three goals in four minutes, the last one on a Connerly penalty kick that dribbled into the corner of the net.
