ROBERT GAINES

Robert “Toosie” Gaines died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 85.

Born in Jefferson County, Mr. Gaines was a retired machinist. He was a member of Paragon Lodge No. 7 F&AM, St. John’s Society and Ebenezer M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Stampley Gaines; his father, Wilson Gaines; his mother, Mary Watson Gaines; five brothers, Alfred Gaines, Isaac Gaines, Rowan Gaines, Sylvester Gaines and Wilson Gaines; and five sisters, Julia Keys Gaines, Anna Gaines, Ellen Smith, Carrie Banks and Mattie Banks.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Gaines Jr. of Omaha, Neb., and Karl Gaines of Vicksburg; his daughter, Carolyn Gaines of New Rochelle, N.Y.; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and other relatives, including Evelyn Graham.
