[02/13/02] St. Aloysious’ girls were the only Warren County team to win a division tournament opener Tuesday night.

The Lady Flashes (11-13) beat archrival Cathedral for the fourth time this season, 45-26, at Bogue Chitto. They will face top seed Enterprise Thursday night with a trip to the South State tournament on the line. St. Al is 0-2 against Enterprise this season, including a 67-43 loss in last week’s regular-season finale.

Porters Chapel Academy’s girls, with a Thursday game in the South State tournament, is the only other county team still playing.

St. Al coach Paul Hayden said he hopes playing Tuesday while Enterprise had a bye turns out to be an advantage for his team.

“The key is to not turn the ball over,” Hayden said. “They are real athletic, but beatable.”

Danielle Klaus had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jen Barnes had nine points and two blocks as St. Al outscored the Lady Green Wave 30-15 in the second half.

“We just started making shots that we were missing in the first half,” said Hayden, whose team led 15-11 at the half. “We were outhustling them and the press was working.”

Matt Horn and Victor Segers closed out their careers with big games, but it wasn’t enough for the Flashes (6-18). The Green Wave had big first quarter, starting on a 16-8 run, and the Flashes never caught up.

“We made some costly mistakes,” Hayden said. “I wish we had a few more wins, but the scores don’t show the improvement this team made.”

St. Al was 14-of-23 from the free-throw line while the Wave wennt 15-of-16 in the first half alone.

Horn had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Segers added 13 points for St. Al, which lost top player Justin Williams (transferred) at the beginning of the season and was without Kyle Richards (ankle injury) for the final three games. Bart Lane and Willie Clark had 19 apiece for Cathedral.
