[02/19/02]Jason Brown beat an overmatched team first with his left arm, then with his bat.
The junior threw a five-inning no-hitter and had three singles and four RBIs in Class 1A St. Aloysius’ 20-0 drubbing of Class 4A Lanier at Bazinsky Field.
Brown struck out 12 and allowed three walks. Lanier (0-2) did not hit one ball out of the infield.
“They were 12 and 6 last year, so I guess they lost a lot of people,” St. Al coach Joe Graves said. “The one thing I didn’t want to get out of this is bad habits and that’s something you can get out of a game like this.”
The Flashes (2-0) sent 20 players to the plate in the second inning and battered Lanier starting pitcher Lester Hollins for 15 runs in the inning and 18 by the end of the second.
Blake Warnock had a single, triple and an RBI, while Charlie Amborn had a single, two RBIs and three runs. Chad Cox had a double, single and an RBI and Victor Segers had an RBI single.
Cox started the second with a double, then 19 batters and seven errors later, Hollins finally got out of the inning with his team trailing 18-0.
Zane Key scored on a Brown single in the third for a 19-0 lead and Miles Ashley scored on a Cox single in the fourth for the 20-0 lead.
The game ended after the fifth by way of the mercy rule.
Brown struck out three each in the second and third innings and K’d two in the first, fourth and fifth. Two Lanier runner reached third base.
“It gives him confidence,” Graves said. “If we can have a big left-hander come in and throw strikes and be effective, that will help us down the line.”
