Services for Lillie Mae Carpenter will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at King David M.B. Church No. 2 with the Rev. Johnny Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carpenter died Monday, March 11, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. She was 78.

Born in Warren County, Mrs. Carpenter was a homemaker and member of King David M.B. Church No. 2. She was a former member of Knights and Daughters of Tabor and Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Robert “Red” Carpenter; her parents, Shelby Palmer Sr. and Lena Wilson Palmer; a son, Robert Carpenter; a daughter, Judy Braxton; four brothers, Ellis Palmer, Shelby Palmer Jr., John Palmer and Cleveland Palmer; and three sisters, Ora Palmer, Senolah Huell and Martha Davis.

Survivors include two sons, James “Red” Carpenter and Larry Carpenter, both of Vicksburg; two daughters, Willie Drayton and Louise Carpenter, both of Vicksburg; two sisters, Elena Liggins of Vicksburg and Olivia Palmer of New Orleans; nieces; nephews; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins.

LILLIAN BERTHA CLARK

Lillian Bertha Clark died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at her daughter’s home. She was 75.

Mrs. Clark was born in the Grange Hall community. She was a member of Cedar Grove M.B. Church. She retired as a cook from Kuhn State Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Clark, and her stepfather, Leonard Bell.

She is survived by her mother, Sarah Parson Bell of Vicksburg; two sons, Carl L. Horne of Vicksburg and Robert L. Brown Jr. of Dallas; two daughters, Carolyn Horne Bradford of Vicksburg and Lynette E. Brown of College Park, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including Richard Bradford III, Pattie Horne Shirley Brown and members of the Parson, Horne, Bradford, Hall, Burn, Harris, Coleman and Cox families of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove M.B. Church with the Rev. Glen Turner officiating.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

HAROLD DENE GRADY

NEWELLTON Harold Dene Grady died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, La. He was 76.

Born in Beedeville, Ark., Mr. Grady was a resident of Newellton. He was a retired farmer and a Navy veteran of World War II. He served aboard the mine sweeper U.S.S. Specter in the Pacific.

He is survived by three sons, Harold “Whoop” Grady and Henry Grady, both of Tallulah, and Robert Grady of Columbia, La.; four daughters, Brenda Grady Lovelady of Robert, La., Barbara Grady Monnin of Winnsboro, La., Donna Grady Martin of Forest City, N.C., and Julie Grady Bechthold of McKinney, Texas; two brothers, James Louis Grady of Tallulah and Billy Grady of Batesville, Ark.; and 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sand Hill Cemetery in Auvergne, Ark. Burial will follow under the direction of Jackson’s Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah and from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at Jackson’s Funeral Home in Newport, Ark.

JAMES COLUMBUS KNIGHT

LYNWOOD, Calif. James Columbus Knight died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, Calif. He was 59.

Mr. Knight was born in Vicksburg and had lived in Lynwood for a number of years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Amelia Rush Knight; and two brothers, Dan Knight Jr. and Harold Knight.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Shaw Knight; two daughters, Fannie Knight of Chicago and Jasmine Knight of Los Angeles; four stepchildren, all of Lynwood; two sisters, Mary Smith and Thomasine Hale, both of Vicksburg; four brothers, Richard Knight and Leonard Knight, both of Vicksburg, Willie Knight of Bellwood, Ill., and George Knight of Virginia Beach, Va.; and two grandchildren.

DORA MEDICI LAVECCHIA

Dora Medici Lavecchia died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. She was 100.

A native of Franklin, La., Mrs. Lavecchia was the daughter of the late Samuel and Sarah Maggio Medici. She lived in Vicksburg until 1907, when her family moved to Merigold, Miss., Fayette and Wilson, La., before returning to Vicksburg in 1922. She worked with her husband, the late Nicholas J. Lavecchia Sr., in his grocery business from 1922 until 1945.

She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church where she was in the Altar Society.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Angela Lavecchia.

She is survived by her son, Nicholas J. Lavecchia Jr. of Vicksburg; her brother, Anthony Medici of Baton Rouge; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be said at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas McGing officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with wake at 6:30.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Canizaro, Paul Franco, John Cesare, Tom Hogan, George Roesch and Donald Roesch.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Lusco, L.T. Watson, Vincent Russo, Joe Canizaro, Charles Roesch and Joseph Gerache.
