[04/18/02]Warren Central’s Caitlin Shelton overcame a mid-match dizzy spell to leave the Vikings’ foes spinning at the Division 4-5A tournament Wednesday at Halls Ferry Park.

Shelton led 4-2 in the second game of her girls’ singles championship match against Forest Hill’s Angela Buck when she was overcome by the heat. After a brief water break, she had to forfeit the second game, but went on to win the match to help WC to a 6-5 win over Vicksburg in the team competition.

The top two players and teams in each district qualified for the state tournament on April 29.

“We started late this year … and to win district is more than I expected,” WC coach Roderick Davidson said.

VHS’ mixed doubles team of Stephanie Warren and Russell Morrison took second place and qualified for the state tournament. They were beaten in the finals by Clinton’s Brittany Grooms and Will Harding, 6-1, 6-2.

“We played pretty strong. Clinton’s mixed doubles team was just the best ones out there, hands down,” VHS coach Melodie Romeo said.
