Vicksburg Fire Department Deputy Chief Rose Shaifer said the person who died was a passenger in the Chevrolet.

The injured people were brought to River Region Medical Center, she said. Their conditions were not known at late morning.

Although emergency officials discussed transporting the victims by helicopter, they were driven the approximately 15 miles south on U.S. 61 in Vicksburg Fire Department ambulances.

The wreck happened in Issaquena County, about two miles north of the Warren County line.

Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol officers investigating the wreck were not free to talk this morning, but the scene showed the 18-wheeler was knocked off the highway on the southbound side into a ditch, the pickup was in the ditch behind the 18-wheeler and the car was in the middle of the highway.

The ditch along that stretch of the highway is about five feet below the road.
