BERTHA LEE ALLEN

MOBILE Bertha Lee Allen died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Mercy Medical Hospital in Daphne, Ala. She was 94.

A native of Greene County, Miss Allen was a resident of Mobile. She was a marriage and family counselor and a member of the Presbyterian faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles H. and Winnie Allen; five brothers, Henry Allen, Daniel Allen, Herbert Allen, T.D. Allen and Ed Allen; three sisters, Beulah Hughes, Helen Allen and Bessie Fike; and a nephew, James Archie Hughes Jr.

She is survived by a sister, Louise Renfroe of Vicksburg; and other relatives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sigler Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Woodward Cemetery in Lucedale.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be her great-nephews.

SID S. CHAMPION

JACKSON Sid S. Champion died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. He was 73.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Champion was reared in Edwards. He was a retired engineer. He served in the Philippines with the Army Corps of Engineers. He attended Hinds Community College and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in industrial engineering.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Champion of Jackson; his daughter, Sarah Puckett of Los Gatos, Calif.; his son, Sid J. Champion of Clinton; his brother, William M. “Bill” Champion of Oxford; four grandchildren; and other relatives.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Edwards Cemetery under the direction of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be members of the Fishers of Men Sunday school class at Colonial Heights Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Baptist Children’s Village, Jackson; or to Colonial Heights Baptist Church Missions program.

LEONARD CHASE SR.

Leonard Chase Sr. died Monday, May 20, 2002, at River Region Medical Center West. He was 78.

Mr. Chase was retired from Anderson-Tully Company. He was a member of Greater Zion Travelers M.B. Church in Utica.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, LaQuidea Chase and Carolyn Chase; his parents, Pearline and Sam Chase; a brother, Roosevelt Chase; two sisters, Christine Williams and Adlean Chase; a stepdaughter, LaVerta Winters; and a stepson, Dayton Fields Jr.

He is survived by four sons, John Bell Chase of Utica, Leonard Chase Jr. of New Orleans, Sam Douglas Chase of Vicksburg and Walter Chase of New York; his daughter, LaJoyce James of Vicksburg; a sister, Elzine Chase of Haines City, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

ADRAIN LOUIS COX SR.

Adrain Louis Cox Sr. died Saturday, May 18, 2002. He was 27.

Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his mother, Flora Celestine Becks Cox.

He is survived by two sons, Adrain Louis Cox Jr. of Jackson and Melvin Cox of Vicksburg; one daughter, Shacortney K. Reed of Vicksburg; his father, Harry Louis Cox Sr. of New Orleans; seven sisters, Ebonie Cox, Carmen Nefetiria Becks, Marilyn Cox Graves and Elizabeth Cox Cosby, all of Vicksburg, Velma Patrice Becks of College Park, Ga., Carolyn Annette Becks of Yuma, Ariz., and Vanessa Becks Martin of Killeen, Texas; six brothers, William A. Becks, Jonathan E. Cox and Jesse J. McGruder, all of Vicksburg, Harry Louis Cox Jr. of Memphis, Horace D. Becks of Mesa, Ariz., and Kenneth D. McGruder of Killeen; his grandparents, Velma Becks Owens and Willie Owens of Yazoo City; and members of the Cox, Becks, McGruder, Straughter, Owens and Mack families.

Services will be in Vicksburg under the direction of Century Funeral Home of Yazoo City.

JOHN AKIN DUNLAP

CUMMING, Ga. John Akin Dunlap died Monday, May 20, 2002, in Cumming, Ga. He was 81.

Mr. Dunlap was a Mason with the Hapeville Lodge and a member of the Bell System Pioneers.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edna E. Dunlap of Cumming; two sons, John A. Dunlap III of Acworth, Ga., and Lanny Dunlap of Temecia, Calif.; five grandchildren; four grandchildren; and other relatives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at McDonald & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in College Park, Ga.

Visitation will be from 6 until 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
