[09/05/02]John Carlisle filed Wednesday for re-election to the District 4 seat he holds on the Vicksburg Warren School District board.

Carlisle began serving the year after city and county school districts consolidated in 1986. He filed qualifying papers with the Warren County Circuit Clerk’s Office for a new six-year term, and the county election commission is expected to certify his petition soon, chairman James McMullin said.

Jan Hyland Daigre qualified last week as a candidate for the District 4 seat, one of two to be on Nov. 5 ballots. The deadline to file is noon Oct. 5.

Carlisle, who has worked for mobile-home-industry supply company LaSalle Bristol for more than 30 years and is a manager there, said he has had children go through the local public schools and has a granddaughter on the way.

Asked about his priorities for future service on the school board, he listed improving students’ overall standardized-test scores, reducing the system’s student-dropout rate and having more teachers become nationally certified as master teachers.

“Academically and athletically, we’re recognized as one of the best school systems in the state,” Carlisle said. “I feel sure most people in Warren County are proud of that.”

Voters elect one trustee from each of the five supervisor districts. Terms are staggered to avoid election of an all-new school board at any time.

In District 3, the other slot on ballots, potential challenger James E. Stirgus Jr. filed, but withdrew after learning of a conflict of interest that could have arisen. Stirgus is a branch manager for Trustmark and the bank would have been disqualified from bidding on school business if he served on the school board.

Pearline Williams, 71, represents District 3.

Other school trustees are Chad Barrett in District 1; Zelmarine Murphy in District 2; and Kay Aasand in District 5.
