City teen charged in stabbing death of brother

[09/14/02]A Vicksburg teenager was arrested and charged with stabbing his brother to death Friday.
Cedric Garrett, 16, 1425 Oakland St., was arrested at 4:30 p.m. Friday, in the stabbing death of his 20-year-old brother, Derrick Maxey, following an argument at their home, said Vicksburg Police Department Lt. Billy Brown.
Brown said Garrett picked up a knife during the argument and stabbed Maxey one time in his left side.
Maxey was transported by ambulance to River Region Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Maxey’s body has been transported to Pearl, Miss., for an autopsy, Coroner John Thomason said.
Garrett, who remained in the Warren County Jail Friday night, will be arraigned Monday, Brown said.
Maxey’s slaying was the county’s fifth of the year:
Glen Evans was found dead Jan. 29 on a Cherry Street sidewalk near Clay Street.
The suspect in that killing, Jeffery Morrison, pleaded guilty May 31 to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and received a two-year prison sentence with credit for time served since his Jan. 29 arrest.
Lila Eliana Welch was found stabbed on Arcadia Streeton May 8. Police arrested their suspect, her husband, Ronald Derell Welch.
Dean Johnson died June 5, the victim of a shooting in the Kings area of north Vicksburg. Brothers Tyrone and Kevin Jenkins were arrested and charged in the case.
Ronnie Coleman, 20, of Greenville, was arrested July 10, accused of assaulting Thomas Engram, 57, of Vicksburg. Engram died Aug. 8 at University Medical Center. Engram’s death resulted from complications from the July 10 injury, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said an autopsy showed. Coleman was charged with manslaughter.
