HARVEY J. BIRD
Harvey J. Bird died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. He was 83.
Mr. Bird was a native of Bradley, Ark., and had lived in Vicksburg for more than 30 years. He retired from the Corps of Engineers as a master first-class pilot. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a staff sergeant in the Army 81st Infantry Wildcat Division in Peleliu and the Philippines and was awarded the bronze star for heroism in combat.
He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and training union director for more than 50 years. He was a Mason and a member of the Vicksburg Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Estelle Bird of Vicksburg; two daughters, Jane Bird Joseph of Clinton and Cathy Bird Mitchell of Vicksburg; three grandchildren, Sara Catherine Joseph, Elizabeth Joseph and Grace Ann Joseph, all of Clinton; a brother, Herschel Bird of Lorence, Texas; and a sister, Glinnis Lemay of Memphis.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Eric Thomas and Dr. John G. McCall officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home and from noon Thursday until the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Crowther, George Williams, deacons of First Baptist and members of the Lions Club.

ELIZABETH F. ERGOOD
Elizabeth F. “Betty” Ergood died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. She was 87.
Mrs. Ergood was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She lived in Hadden Heights, N.J., for 57 years before moving to Vicksburg five years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Ergood Sr.
Survivors include her daughter, Charlbeth M. Coleman of Vicksburg; her son, Charles M. Ergood of Hadden Heights; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden, N.J.
ROSE MARIE GAMBLE
Rose Marie Gamble died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson. She was 76.
Miss Gamble was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg and worked for the Corps of Engineers for 30 years as a data analyst. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister and a member of the Altar Society and Bereavement Committee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert A. and Mary Rafferty Gamble; her brother, Franklin P. Gamble; and her sister, Mary Loraine Butler.
Survivors include two nieces, Linda B. Black of Little Rock, Ark., and Mary Noel Mabry of Hot Springs, Ark.; great-nieces; great-nephews; and other relatives.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, 713 Crawford St., Vicksburg, MS 39180.

SOFRONIA McGLOSTER
Sofronia “Sofie” McGloster died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at her home. She was 76.
A graduate of Magnolia High School, Mrs. McGloster was retired from the Warren County Department of Health. She was a member of Greater Mount Olive M.B. Church, where she had served as president of the choir and was in the Beautifying Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Sofronia Remsey; four sisters, Amanda Nickolson, Priscilla Joyce, Katie Kelly and Alberta Remsey; and two brothers, Millard Remsey and Willie Remsey.
Survivors include her husband, George McGloster of Vicksburg; one son, Lloyd Yelder of Vicksburg; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including Patricia Yelder of Anchorage, Ala., and members of the Davis, Kelly and Berry families of Vicksburg.
Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
THERESA ANN MYLES
Services for Theresa Ann “Tee” Myles will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Zion No. 1 M.B. Church with Pastor Larry Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Myles died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. She was 44.
Mrs. Myles worked at Rainbow Casino.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roscoe Derby; a brother, Leroy Freeman; and a sister, Lillian Derby-Miller.
Survivors include her husband, Charles A. Myles Sr. of Vicksburg; two sons, Charles A. Myles Jr. and Joshua A. Myles, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Octavia Myles of Vicksburg; her mother, Edna Prentiss Derby of Vicksburg; two sisters, Zorada Derby of Vicksburg and Eleanor Derby-Neally of Oakland, Calif.; two brothers, Larry Freeman of Vicksburg and Willie Freeman of Richardson, Texas; nieces, including Natasha Derby of Vicksburg; and other relatives, including Louise Means of Vicksburg.
RUTH PETERSON
CLINTON Ruth Peterson died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at her home in Clinton. She was 82.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Peterson was a longtime resident of Clinton. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther B. Peterson.
She is survived by a daughter, Lynn J. Pigg of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, Gene Pigg, Jodi Adcock, Deanne Evans and Kim Smyly; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 4 until 7 tonight and from noon Thursday until the service at the funeral home.

WANSLEY WRIGHT
JACKSON Wansley Wright died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at his home in Jackson. He was 59.
Mr. Wright was a member of Pratt Memorial Methodist Church. He was assistant principal of Whitten Middle School, Chastain Middle School and Jim Hill High School. He coached at Callaway High School and served as band instructor at Jefferson Junior High School in Vicksburg and Fayette High School and Jefferson County Junior High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Elnora Wright.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie Chiplin Wright of Jackson; three sons, Ary Wright of Atlanta and Brian Wright and Kevin Wright, both of Dallas; a brother, Fredrick Wright of Columbus; a sister, Phyllis Anderson of Jackson; three grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pratt Memorial Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Garden Memorial Park Cemetery in Jackson.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Thursday until the service at the church.
