DALTON JONATHAN ATLAS JR.

PORT GIBSON Services for Dalton Jonathan “Joe” Atlas Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Beechland M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Frank McGriggs officiating. Burial will follow at Atlas Family Cemetery in Port Gibson with Thompson Funeral Home in charge. Visitation will be from 1 until 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home with family hour from 6 until 7 p.m. at Christian Chapel Church in Port Gibson and Monday from 10 a.m. until the service at Beechland Church.

Mr. Atlas died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. He was 65.

He was a member and usher at Beechland Baptist Church. He was retired from Cooper Lighting in Vicksburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dalton and Agnes Atlas; and two brothers, John David Atlas and Matthew Atlas.

Survivors include his wife, Gustina Atlas of Port Gibson; four brothers, James Lenzy Atlas of Chicago, William “Bell” Atlas of New Orleans, David Atlas of Cleveland, Ohio, and Douglas M. Atlas of Port Gibson; two sisters, Harriette A. Patterson and Martha L. Atlas, both of Port Gibson; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

MARY STRICKLAND DENNIS

Mary Strickland Dennis died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. She was 79.

Mrs. Dennis was born in McCool and had lived in Vicksburg for 54 years. She was retired from Waterways Experiment Station. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dennis, in 1997; and her parents, Leonard and Maude Strickland.

Mrs. Dennis is survived by two sons, Ronald Wayne Dennis of Birmingham, Ala., and B. Stephen Dennis of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Ila Mann of Greenville and Evelyn Irwin of Jackson; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home with burial at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 until 5 this afternoon at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be David Irwin, Michael Dennis, Ronald Dennis, Cameron Dennis, Stuart Paulk and Jim D. Alexander.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Horn, Dorothy Horn, Jean Gann, Peggy Griffin, Rosemary Shaft, Gracie Park, Robert Brock, Jerry Hardy, Vernon Martin and David Duke.

HELEN BERNICE CREECY NICKLES

Helen Bernice Creecy Nickles, a former long-time resident of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at her daughter’s home in Greenwell Springs, La. She was 84.

Mrs. Nickles was born in Stuttgart, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Charles A.V. “Bud” Nickles; her parents, Jenny and Ray Creecy; two brothers, Harold Creecy and Alvin Creecy; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Rose Nickles.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce McCulley of Greenwell Springs; a son, Charles Ray Nickles of Vicksburg; a brother, Marvin Creecy of Hot Springs, Ark.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lone Tree Cemetery in Stuttgart with the Rev. Mickey Stringfield of Ruston, La., officiating.

MARY ELIZABETH SULLIVAN PARRETTE

Mary Elizabeth Sullivan Parrette died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at her home in Vicksburg She was 74.

Mrs. Parrette was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg and a 40-year contract specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She attended All Saints’ Episcopal School and Carr Central High School. She received her degree in business from the University of Southern Mississippi at Natchez and was featured in the 1979 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Mrs. Parrette was a charter member of Hawkins United Methodist Church and served as secretary and president of the Vicksburg Chapter No. 77 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry P. and Minnie Lea West Sullivan Jr.

Mrs. Parrette is survived by her husband, John Earl Parrette of Vicksburg; two daughters, Rachel Gray of Jackson and Rebecca Brasfield of Vicksburg; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Ferguson of Newark, Del., Rebecca Glover of Apopka, Fla., and Charles W. Brasfield III of Daytona Beach, Fla,; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday at Fisher Funeral Home with Chaplain Sam Dunaway officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of the service.

Pallbearers will be Pat Bonner, Mike Bonner, John Stout, Darryl Hale, Tommy Hutto and Steve Strong.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles W. Brasfield Sr., B.W. Lawson, Jim Robertson, Pete Haley, Debbie Runyon and Dr. Lee Giffin.
