Shawn Newman with the Keystone Ministries removes vines from the gate surrounding the grassy area behind the old Junius Ward Johnson YMCA building on Monroe Street Wednesday. Mike Dunaway with Keystone Ministries said the building’s owner, Michael Hayes of Nashville, is using members of the Keystone Ministries re-entry program to renovate the outer appearance of the building. “There will be windows replaced, painting and roof repair within the next couple of weeks, ” Dunaway said. The Clay Street building was purchased by Hayes in April 2000, with plans to convert the building into one- and two-bedroom apartments for those 55 and older. The site is also being considered for a blues museum and coffee shop, Dunaway said. (The Vicksburg Post/Melanie Duncan)
