ROBERT HOYT BRUMLEY SR.

OAK GROVE Robert Hoyt Brumley Sr. died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. He was 75.

Mr. Brumley was born in Many, La., and lived in Oak Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Zeddie Lee and Sudie Vera Brumley; four brothers, Julian Brumley, Louie Brumley, Hobert Brumley and Jasper Brumley; and one sister, Marie Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Mable Brumley of Oak Grove; three sons, Robert Brumley Jr. and Carl Brumley, both of Oak Grove, and Cecil Brumley of Daytona Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Dolly Jackson and Sheri Ashley, both of Oak Grove, and Virginia Cossey of Portland, Ark.; one brother, Raymond Brumley of Oak Grove; one sister, Sarah Alice Russell of Baton Rouge, La.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Macedonia Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mike Howard and Terry Ganey officiating. Burial will follow at Macedonia Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Cox Funeral Home all day today and Monday at the church until the service.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Albritton, Robbie Brumley, Steven Brumley, Dean Jackson, Jason Bullock and Shannon Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donald McGaha, John Paul Braswell, and the men’s Sunday School class of Macedonia Baptist Church.

MARY LYERLY BIRDSONG DUVAL

Mary Lyerly Birdsong Duval died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at a local nursing home. She was 87.

Mrs. Duval was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg except for a brief time when she lived in Costa Rica. She was also a lifelong member of Crawford Street United Methodist Church.

She attended Vicksburg Public Schools and All Saints’ College and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women and did graduate work at Peabody College for Teachers and at Columbia University.

She was a former teacher at Jett School for five years.

Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Duval worked as a licensed tour guide for the Vicksburg National Military Park and National Cemetery for 46 years before her retirement in 1999.

She was also an accomplished violinist who performed with numerous local orchestras and ensembles, including the Community Concert Association.

She was also a member of Magnolia Garden Club, where she was a charter member; the Old Court House Museum Society; the Vicksburg-Warren County Humane Society; the Vicksburg Genealogical Society; the Vicksburg Theatre Guild; the Matinee Music Club; and the Ashmead Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by her father, J.T. “Tom” Birdsong; her mother, Marylu Walker; and her husband, Paul Robert Duval.

She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Burke of Jackson; one daughter, Mary Paul Ross of Merrickville, Ontario, Canada; one son, Robert Lyerly Duval, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Crawford Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Fisher Funeral Home from 3 until 5 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the Audubon Society or a nature center.

Pallbearers will be Andre Duval, William Burke, Joe Bayhi, Terry Winschel, Al Elmore and Herb Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be William O. “Bill” Burke, Roy I. Bailey, Edward Cunningham, Gordon Cotton, Harry Gillespie, Dean Birdsong, Robert W. Dunaway, Thomas B. Henry Jr., Leon Henry and R. Henry Jones.

BETTY JANE HALLBERG

Services for Betty Jane Hallberg will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Thomas, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2 until 5 p.m. today.

Mrs. Hallberg died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at her home. She was 61.

A native of New Orleans, Mrs. Hallberg had lived in Vicksburg since 1962.

She attended Mississippi College, was named Miss Mississippi in 1959 and remained active in all phases of the pageant. She owned and operated Sumthin’ Diff’rent Florist for a number of years.

Mrs. Hallberg was a member of the Vicksburg Theatre Guild and Green Hills Garden Club, and was past president of the Vicksburg Council of Garden Clubs. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Phifer and Myrtis Brewer Porter.

She is survived by her husband, W.F. “Buddy” Hallberg of Vicksburg; two sons, W.F. “Bill” Hallberg III of Vicksburg and Miles Hallberg of Spartanburg, S.C.; one sister, Mary Lynn Lynch of Vicksburg; and two grandchildren.
