MYRTLE WILSON MAPLES

Myrtle “Mert” Wilson Maples died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at her home. She was 87.

Mrs. Maples was born in Webster County where she graduated from Springdale High School. She worked as an operator for the Southern Bell Telephone Company in Atlanta, Ga. during World War II. She returned to Mississippi and settled in Vicksburg after the war. She worked as an assistant to the engineering department at R.G. LeTourneau before retiring in 1976.

Mrs. Maples was preceded in death by her husband, Tobias Allen Maples, Sr.

Survivors includes two daughters, Kathy Dyson of Texas City, Texas and Sue Hopkins of League City, Texas; a son, Toby Maples of Houston, Texas; one brother, Charles Wilson of Terry; grandchildren and great-granchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home with Chaplain Sam Dunaway officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Monty Wilson, Greg Wilson, Larry Davis, Matt Dyson, Casey Dyson and Mike Haden.

Honorary pallbearer will be Kimple Ryan Hopkins.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Ministries, Inc., Mississippi Sheriff’s Home for Boys and Girls and French Camp Home.

IDA WILLIAMS BROOKS

DETROIT, Mich. Ida Williams Brooks died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at her home in Detroit, Mich. She was 76.

Mrs. Brooks was a former resident of Vicksburg and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Brooks; her parents, Frank Williams Sr. and Lula Fuller Williams; and two brothers, Frank Williams Jr. and Elijah “Babe Ruth” Williams.

Survivors include three daughters, Valerie Williams Hunter of Vicksburg and Carolyn Upshaw and Brendalyn Ellis, both of Detroit; a sister, Calena O’Neal of Detroit; a brother, Johnny B. Williams of Detroit; six grandchildren including, Deidra N. Williams of Vicksburg and Sgt. First Class Karl Hunter of Ft. Stewart, Ga.; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives including the Chapman, Stevenson, Fisher, Turner, Williams, Prentiss, Gaskins, Drayton, Sanders and Fuller families of Vicksburg.

Ellis Memorial Funeral Home in Detroit has charge of arrangements.

SAMUEL OTIS HARRIS

Services for Samuel Otis Harris will be at 2 p.m. today at Greater Mount Lebanon Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Clark officiating. Burial will follow at the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Harris, formerly of Vicksburg, died Saturday Nov. 9, 2002 in Bolton as a result of an automobile accident. He was 46.

Mr. Harris lived in Jackson, Tenn. and was a truck driver for the State of Tennessee. He graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1975 and was a memeber of Greater Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in Vicksburg.

Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents, Roosevelt Harris, Sr. and Minveria Harris; a brother Roosevelt Harris, Jr.; and a sister, Nellie Hicks.

Survivors include his fiancee, Phyllis Linear of Jackson, Tenn.; a daughter, Lakisha Na’ Shunda Hill Nelson of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Edward Harris of Jackson; five sisters, Lucy Green of Vicksburg, Helen Waites of Texas, and Geraldine Johnston, Shirley Hassan and Brenda Richardson, all of Los Angeles.
