Carroll’s late goal lifts WC to huge win

[11/26/02]Greg Carroll’s rocket of a left leg gave coach Jay Harrison and the Warren Central Vikings one of their biggest wins in several years.

Carroll booted a shot from about 35 yards out into the corner of the goal to beat Madison Central, 4-3, Monday night in Madison.

The win was the first for Harrison over the Jaguars.

“Our kids played hard and never got their heads down,” said Harrison, whose team will host Ridgeland today at 7:30 at Mark Strickland Field in Bovina. “We’ve never seemed to be able to beat them. This is pretty sweet for us.”

Dusty Pennington had two second-half goals as the Vikings took a 3-1 lead. Madison came back with two goals to tie the game at 3-3 late in the second half before Carroll’s big shot.

Allen Carlisle gave WC (3-2-1) its first lead on a penalty kick. Carroll and Hunter Sumerall each had assists for WC.

Playing without its No. 1 goalie and three other starters, the Lady Vikes (2-3) did not have enough to take down state-power Madison Central.

Coker, a cheerleader, will also be absent for tonight’s game against Ridgeland.

Miranda Hunt had a goal and three assists and seven different players scored goals in Vicksburg’s (6-1-1) blowout of Jim Hill.

Keri McGowan, Tayvi Ellis, Holly Head, Laura Peyton, Viola Howard and Malana Westcott each had a goal apiece in the win.

Head, Laura Johnston and Katrina Shirley each had an assist in the win.

The Missy Gators played another game without leading scorer Brandi Parker, who is in Florida trying to make the Junior Olympic National team, and defensive stalwart Brandi Head, who was in North Carolina at a select tournament.
