Ranked teams have found things tough-going against the Vicksburg Gators.

Devin Jones scored a game-high 26 points, including converting 16 of 18 free throws, to give the Gators a 58-50 win over No. 10 Wingfield Tuesday night.

Vicksburg had already beaten No. 6 Provine twice this season and on Tuesday it added the Falcons (5-2) to its list of JPS teams to fall to Vicksburg this year.

“They know that the River City isn’t a joke now,” said Jones, who was coming off a 27-point performance Monday night. “We played hard and with intensity.”

L.J. Scott scored 15 points and snagged 11 rebounds and Roy Williams had six points and four steals.

It was also a return, at least for one night, to what Gator fans call “Dellie-ball.” Coach Dellie Robinson has stressed defense and ball control, but this season wanted to run more to compensate for lack of height.

Against the Falcons, the Gators’ defense held 6-foot, 7-inch Christian Marshall to 12 points only four in the second half.

Vicksburg used a matchup zone to double-team Marshall as much a possible with Cedrick Parsons doing most of the defensive damage.

“We tried to double-team him as much as possible and deny him the basketball,” Robinson said. “I thought Cedrick Parsons did a great job defending him one-on-one when he had too.”

Dexter Brunson’s 3-pointer at the buzzer before halftime gave the Falcons a 24-23 lead at the break and the game stayed close until the fourth quarter.

A Jones layup midway through the fourth quarter gave the Gators their biggest lead of the night 49-41 and Wingfield did not recover.

VHS will be off until Dec. 3 when they travel to Forest Hill.

(G) VHS 88, Wingfield 57

The Missy Gators (4-3) used a stifling defense to force 36 Wingfield turnovers to turn this one into a blowout early.

Shalonda Williams paced five Missy Gators in double figures with 15 points. Arcola Scott scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Tiffany Hubbard scored 12, snagged eight rebounds and had five steals, Tricia Dart had 12 points and Sebrina Sanders came off the bench to score 10.

Vicksburg led 30-8 at the end of the first quarter and never faced a challenge.

“A couple coaches I talked to said our quickness should be able to control the game,” Vicksburg coach Mike Coleman said. “That’s exactly what we did.”

Vanadia Phillips scored 21, including four 3-pointers from at least 35 feet away, for Wingfield. Soon after she nailed three treys in a row early in the fourth, Vicksburg moved to a box-and-one defense and she scored only two the rest of the game.

(B) WC 81, C. Springs 78

Ronnie Jones’ 3-pointer at the buzzer sent the game into overtime and the Vikings (6-1) escaped with a win Tuesday night.

Warren Central trailed by seven heading into the fourth quarter before mounting a comeback.

Dewayne Washington scored a game-high 25 points, Jones had 22, Chi-Chi Ezekwe scored 16 and Brian Phelps added 12 in the win.

Ebon Williams scored 19, Carla Latham scored 15 and Cookie Johnson netted nine for the Lady Vikes (4-3).

After trailing 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, Warren Central outscored Crystal Springs 20-9 in the second quarter and never looked back.
