On a cold, sodden field in Bovina, Warren Central soccer may have been the only thing that felt hot.
Greg Carroll scored three first-half goals to propel the Vikings (4-2-1) past Ridgeland, 4-1, on Tuesday.
“He is an amazing player, a true finisher,” Vikings coach Jay Harrison said. “Any kid who can come from another sport without practicing with the team, and have this type of performance, is just amazing.”
With the big win over Madison Central Monday night, coupled with the return of five Viking football players to the starting lineup, the team Harrison had envisioned winning the Division 6-5A title appears to be living up to expectations.
“It appeared some of our momentum carried over from (Monday) night. The win (Monday) night brought us up some, something a coach can’t do,” Harrison said. “Right now we’re just playing well and doing the right things.”
Carroll had the winning shot late in the second half against Madison Central, and wasted little time finding his momentum against the Titans. He scored three goals in 26 minutes while Allen Carlisle gave an assist and added a goal to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead at the half.
“Both teams were hot at the beginning,” Titans assistant coach Jeff Baumann said.
“They were just faster … and more experienced.”
Warren Central outshot Ridgeland 42-10 and the visiting Titans did not attempt a shot until the second half.
Jay Roberts scored the lone goal for the Titans.
“I’m pleased with our defense. (Ridgeland) is a lot better than their record shows,” Harrison said. “I think we played a good style tonight, and we had our starters in the first half, and that’s why we scored.”

The Lady Vikes (3-4) lost their starting goalie after the first half to cheerleading practice, and then allowed the Lady Titans (2-4-2) to pull past them in the second half to lose 3-0.
“The first half they gave us fits, we thought we could beat them with our defense,” Lady Titans coach Josh Avenmarg said. “They changed their keeper at the half and that helped us.”
Down 1-0 going into the second half, the Lady Vikes were forced to change goalies after starter Emily Coker had to leave the game to fulfill an obligation to the cheerleading squad.
Claudette Gilman took over the goal in the second half, “doing it for the team,” and the Lady Titans took advantage of the inexperience and scored two second-half goals.
It was the second game in a row the Lady Vikes were held scoreless after losing 3-0 to Madison Central Monday night.
“When we first started playing, it looked really good, we just didn’t finish our opportunities,” Lady Vikes head coach Holly Lane said. “There is no reason for the score to be what it was.”
