Robert Arledge has put his name into consideration to replace Johnny Price who defeated him in a runoff last month to be the new Warren County Court and Youth Court judge.

“I believe because I have enjoyed success I have a responsibility to give back to Warren County, and I have a heartfelt desire to do that,” Arledge said. “That is why I seek the post.”

The names of Arledge, 45, and Marcie Tanner Southerland, 49, are now before the Warren County Board of Supervisors which is accepting resumes until 5 p.m. Friday.

The person they choose will serve about a year as Warren County prosecuting attorney, the part-time job Price, 56, has held for the past 13 years and will leave Jan. 1 to start a four-year term in the judgeship.

Price and Arledge finished first and second in the five-candidate field on Nov. 5 in which 16-year incumbent Gerald Hosemann finished last with less than 10 percent of the vote.

Price polled nearly 80 percent of the vote in the runoff.

“By Friday at 5 p.m. we will know who the candidates are, then we will interview them on Monday and the board will study the qualifications of the candidates and make a decision,” said Richard George, president of the county governing board.

George said the legal requirements for the job are to possess all the qualifications of other county officers and be a licensed and practicing lawyer.

George said the final decision will be based on qualifications. “We need someone to be on alert and have capabilities from the start,” he said.

Arledge said if appointed he will devote all his time to the job.

“If appointed I will not accept any new cases from my private practice, I will devote all my time to becoming the best Warren County prosecutor we have ever had,” Arledge said.

Southerland served three terms as Northern District Justice Court judge. She has been in private practice since 1996 and has said she especially wants to focus on youth court where she has worked before.

“I feel that there’s a real necessity for stability over there,” she said, “especially, after everything that has happened over this past year.”

Duties in the post include responsibility for prosecuting misdemeanor criminal charges in justice and youth court and representing the county, where needed, in all investigations of felonies.
