[12/11/02]In Vicksburg coach Drew Kennedy’s 2-4-4 alignment, the majority of the offense is dependent on the forward’s play and on Tuesday night, Jeremy Johnson and Columbus transfer Matt Minyard didn’t let him down.

With three minutes remaining in the game, Johnson found Minyard for the deciding goal in a 3-2 win over Callaway Tuesday.

“Coach wanted me to be less selfish, so I found Matt and he finished,” Johnson said.

VHS (4-5, 1-0) fell behind 2-0 early in the first half to the Chargers (5-3, 1-1) with goals by Marcus Williams and Marcus Hairston before the Gators’ Russell Morrison put them on the scoreboard with 10 minutes remaining for a 2-1 deficit at half.

The Gator forwards then went to work.

Coleman Morrison’s shot six minutes into the second half pulled the Chargers’ defense out of position and Johnson found himself alone in front of the goal to tie the score at 2-2.

“We play a control game, and in the second half we eased off the press and Vicksburg pushed theirs,” Chargers assistant coach David Forsythe said. “It’s a tribute to Vicksburg not giving up when they were down 2-0.”

The game, due to sloppy field conditions, became a battle at midfield until Johnson found breathing room to make a cross to Minyard. Minyard’s corner shot hit the goal post and trickled inside for the winning score.

“I think we missed some chances (in the first half), and in the second half we really attacked well,” Kennedy said. “It’s just a matter of getting confidence, and coming back 2-0 will give them that.”

VHS 17, Callaway 0

One thing Missy Gators coach Kevin Manton didn’t have to worry about Tuesday night was the game coming down to a nail-bitter.

VHS (11-1-1) got four goals from Brandi Parker and three apiece from Brandi Head and Tayvi Ellis to breeze past Callaway (1-4, 0-2) in the most lopsided win of the season for the Missy Gators.

Beverly Simmons and Holly Head scored two apiece and Keri McGowan, Katrina Shirley and Jill Rush scored a goal apiece.
