Cathedral loses track of Head, then game

For nearly 56 minutes Saturday afternoon, Natchez Cathedral kept Michael Head under wraps. The St. Aloysius junior was double-teamed, harassed and guarded tightly.

Then, all of a sudden, the Green Wave lost track of Head, and lost the game as a result.

Head scored two goals in a two-minute span in the second half, then assisted on another about nine minutes later to lead St. Al to a 3-2 victory. Bray Jones also scored a goal for the Flashes, and Jeff Rottman and Daniel Edney each had an assist.

“(Head) is phenomenal. In the first half he took shots from all over the field on each side, and in the second half we were looking for him but he kept showing up. He was tough,” Cathedral coach Rocky Kettering said. “We put two defenders in the middle and their job was to stay with (Head). He stayed pretty much on one side of the field.

“In the second half, he started moving from left to right and our guys had trouble keeping up with him. They’d follow him and it would leave a hole in the middle.”

St. Al has never lost to Cathedral (8-1)..

The Flashes outshot Cathedral 13-4 in the first half, but had few quality shots. Finally, Rottman hit Head on a long clearing pass about 16 minutes into the second half and Head broke free of his defender.

Head banked a shot into the goal low off the left post to tie the game at 1-1, then put the Flashes ahead two minutes later when he tapped a header over Cathedral keeper Brett Tosspon to make it 2-1.

Head celebrated the goal by ripping off his jersey as he sprinted toward midfield.

“I was pretty fired up. That was a great goal,” Head said with a smile.

With 14 minutes to play in the game, Head had a third chance at his third goal. He tapped a shot past Tosspon, but it didn’t go in. Jones followed up, however, and knocked the ball into the net to make it 3-1. Cathedral scored late in the game for the final margin.
