Sam Brown
Sam Brown died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 90.
Mr. Brown worked as a core drill operator for 36 years at Waterways Experiment Station. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lizzie Richards; three brothers, Johnnie Jackson, Chester Ross and Walter Warfield; and one sister, Sidney Brown.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel L. Brown of Vicksburg; two sons, Samuel J. Brown of Vicksburg and John A. Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three daughters, Allyese B. Davis and Sharon B. McBride, both of Vicksburg, and Althea Brown of Birmingham, Ala.; six grandchildren; and other relatives, including members of the Warfield and Ross families of Chicago.
Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.
Earle Coleman Jr.
CARPENTER Earle Coleman Jr. died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 87.
A lifelong resident of Carpenter, Mr. Coleman was a retired farmer and cattleman. He was a member of Utica Presbyterian Church and participated in soil conservation and land management.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earle and Willie Anderson Coleman; and a brother, William Ray Coleman.
He is survived by two nephews, Richard Ray Coleman of Clinton and William David Coleman of St. Louis, Mo.; a niece, Judith Enright of Norwalk, Conn.; and other relatives.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica with the Rev. Ben James officiating. Burial will follow at White Oak Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home in Utica.
Pallbearers will be Michael Enright, Tommy Enright, Tony Sims, Richard Coleman, David Coleman and Jason Cooper.
William Dale Garner
Services for William Dale Garner will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Baptist church with the Rev. Billy Brumfield officiating. Burial will follow at Yokena Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Riles Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. Friday until the service at the church.
Mr. Garner died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 75.
Born in Magnolia, Ark., to Alan Roy and Olive Mae Driscoll Garner, Mr. Garner was a resident of Vicksburg. He was a graduate of Arkansas State University and a veteran, having served in the Army and the Navy. He retired in 1982 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lower Mississippi Valley Division as a civil engineer after 34 years of service. He was a member of the National Association of Professional Engineers and the American Legion Post 106. He was a member of the Senior Choir and Keenagers at Immanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Sikes Garner of Vicksburg; two sons, Dennis D. Garner and Kevin H. Garner, both of Vicksburg; three brothers, Roy Eugene Garner of Conway, Ark., Charles Edward Garner of Brooklett, Ga., and Alan Ray Garner of Tehacapi, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Mathews, George Osborn, Gordon Evans, Bill Arrington, James Purvis, Jonah Ray Jones, Don McAuley and Bob Gordon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Daniel Edney, Bob Craft and deacons of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 6949 U.S. 61 South, Vicksburg, MS 39180.
Jo Ann Payne
Jo Ann Payne died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at her home. She was 50.
Mrs. Payne was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Bingham Dandredge and Louise Payne Saddler; and one brother, Vincent Smith.
She is survived by her mother, Catherine Hooper Smith; two brothers, Wilbert Smith Jr. and Bernard Payne, both of Vicksburg; four sisters, Virginia Jefferson of Vicksburg, Rosemary Bingham Washington of Detroit and Ethel Lee McQueen and Alfreida Shelton, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; and other relatives, including Eddie Hooper and Ora Lee Hooper of Vicksburg.

Freddie B. Porter Sr.
Services for Freddie B. “Fred” Porter Sr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Mayfield Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Porter died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 65.
Mr. Porter was a retired butcher from Judy’s Fish Market. He was a member of Mount Zion M.B. Church No. 4, where he was a deacon.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Porter Blue; a stepbrother, Fred Hall; his parents, Arthur Porter Sr. and Mamie Lee Gant Porter; and his maternal grandfather, Percy Gant.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Davis Porter of Vicksburg; five sons, Ronnie Porter Sr. and Preston Porter Sr., both of Vicksburg, Larry Porter of Nashville, Kenneth Porter Sr. of Chicago and Freddie B. Porter Jr. of the U.S. Marine Corps in Hawaii; three daughters, Pearlie Lewis of Chula Vista, Calif., Sadie Randle of Vicksburg and Sharon Gail Porter Owens of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Arthur Porter Jr. of Chicago and James Louis Porter Sr. of Vicksburg; two sisters, Helen Marie Johnson of Vicksburg and Alma Lee Smith of Maywood, Ill.; and 19 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
