[1/22/03]St. Al had plenty of chances to beat St. Andrew’s Tuesday night and earn a spot in the Class 1A state playoffs, but the Flashes never took advantage.

St. Andrew’s scored a goal with less than three minutes to play to beat the Flashes, 2-1, and advance to the playoffs.

“It was a heckuva game,” St. Al coach Carlos Lee said. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the net. We outplayed and outhustled them, but they got two lucky goals.”

Joe Theobald scored the Flashes lone goal in the second half to tie the game 1-1. But St. Al played the final 20 minutes without Michael Engle and Michael Head who were whistled for red cards.

“You could tell the guys were down,” Lee said. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”

The Flashes made the North State championship game last season.
